Christmas in the San Nicola district of Gravina in Puglia

A sande Neccòule u Natoil 'nge voule — meaning "In San Nicola, Christmas is a must" in the Gravina dialect — is the Christmas festival that transforms the San Nicola district every December, one of the most evocative corners of the historic center of Gravina in Puglia (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia). This is not an event imposed from above: it was born in 2022 from the spontaneous initiative of the neighborhood residents, who call themselves "Sannicolini" and decided to bring the magic of Christmas back to the alleys, courtyards, and stairways of their district.
For two evenings, the district dresses up for the party: lights, Christmas scenery, nativity scenes set up in entrance halls and workshops, Santa's House, and photo corners designed for both adults and children. Residents open their courtyards and doors, and the maze of narrow streets in ancient Gravina becomes a route to be discovered on foot, map in hand, from one surprise to the next.
The program alternates performances offered for free by local artists: musicians, street performers, exhibitions by students of the "G. Tarantino" Musical High School of Gravina, and the Murgia majorettes. A particularly heartfelt moment is the string and choir concert in the Church of Saints Nicola and Cecilia, which also opens its doors for guided tours during the evenings.
The delicious heart of the festival is the tasting of typical products, curated by residents and neighborhood businesses: arrosticini and gnumeridd (traditional Murgia offal rolls), pettole, bruschetta with deconstructed parmigiana, artisanal panettone, hot chocolate, and craft beer, as well as pasta dishes and wine. A food and wine journey that accompanies the visitor throughout the district.
The event is organized and self-funded by the Sannicolini APS association with the collaboration of schools, volunteer citizens, and the patronage of the Municipality of Gravina in Puglia. In just a few editions, it has become a fixed appointment in the Gravina Christmas calendar, capable of attracting families and visitors from all over the Bari Murgia area.
The Sannicolini APS association has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of A sande Neccòule u Natoil 'nge voule in the San Nicola district of Gravina in Puglia. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place on a weekend in December, with the usual festive evenings featuring lights, nativity scenes, street artists, craft markets, and tastings of Murgia specialties. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
