The Gravina tarallo takes center stage at the Municipal Pine Forest of Gravina in Puglia

The Immaculate Conception Tarallo Festival is the event that, leading up to December 8th, celebrates one of the most authentic symbols of local gastronomy in Gravina in Puglia (Metropolitan City of Bari): the Gravina tarallo. Organized by the Associazione Obiettivo Giovani APS with the patronage of the Municipality of Gravina, the festival takes place in the picturesque Municipal Pine Forest on Via Maurizio Lettieri, which is transformed for the occasion into a small Christmas village filled with lights, stalls, and the scent of baked goods.
The Immaculate Conception tarallo is more than just a snack: it is a Traditional Agri-Food Product (PAT) recognized by the Ministry, deeply linked to the devotion of the Virgin Mary. Made with durum wheat semolina, flour, yeast, salt, fennel seeds, and a hint of anise liqueur, tradition dictates it was consumed at noon on December 7th as a light devotional fast. Its crown shape and light color symbolically reflect the purity of the Immaculate Conception. This knowledge, passed down through generations, is brought back to the heart of city life by the festival.
The event combines fine food and wine with a Christmas atmosphere: markets featuring stalls of typical Murgia products, tastings of the tarallo in various versions, festive lights and the lighting of the Christmas tree, the Santa Claus Village for children, and the Tarallo Urban Fest, a section dedicated to urban art with live painting, exhibitions, and workshops. There is also a charitable dimension, with the donation of taralli to the pediatric ward of the "Fabio Perinei" Hospital of the Murgia.
Gravina in Puglia, a town carved into the rock overlooking its famous ravine, provides a historic backdrop for the event. The festival is an ideal opportunity to discover the old town, its underground caves, and the traditions of the Bari hinterland during one of the most enchanting times of the year. Admission is free, and the event is designed for families, curious visitors, and food culture enthusiasts. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the organizers.
