The taste of Lucanian autumn in the village of Castello del Malconsiglio
There is a flavour that tells of Miglionico's autumn better than any other: the sweet and ancient taste of dried figs. The Festival of Dried Figs and Autumn Flavours was created precisely to celebrate this product of Lucanian peasant tradition, a fruit that for centuries represented a precious resource for the families of the Matera village.
Along the stone streets of the historic centre, dried figs transform into a feast for the palate: stuffed with walnuts, covered in chocolate, paired with aged cheeses, or featured in jams, sweets, and traditional preparations. Surrounding them is the rich repertoire of Basilicata's autumn flavours, in a journey of taste that enhances the typical products of the region.
The festival is much more than a food celebration. The programme includes live demonstrations, workshops, and experiential paths, as well as musical performances, folk dance moments, craft exhibitions, shows, round tables, and guided tours of the evocative historic centre. The heart of the event is the Castello del Malconsiglio, a fortress famous for hosting the Conspiracy of the Barons against Ferdinand of Aragon in 1485.
Organized by the Pro Loco Miglionico in collaboration with UNPLI and the Municipality, the festival is a rooted event that attracts visitors from all over Basilicata and beyond. It is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village a few kilometres from Matera, immersing yourself in the flavours and traditions of the Lucanian autumn.
The Festival of Dried Figs returns to Miglionico for its nineteenth edition, tentatively scheduled from October 3 to 5, 2026 (dates to be officially confirmed). Organized by Pro Loco Miglionico with UNPLI and the Municipality, the event enlivens the historic centre and the Castello del Malconsiglio with the dried fig as the protagonist, accompanied by the autumn flavours of Basilicata.
The detailed programme with definitive dates will be published by Pro Loco in the preceding weeks. The festival traditionally unfolds as follows:
