About Mattie Bean Festival

Every spring, the small village of Mattie, in the heart of the Susa Valley, comes alive for the Spring Fair and Bean Festival. From early morning, the streets of the town center fill with stalls featuring local products, nurseries, and handicrafts, while the renowned Mattie bean takes center stage. With treasure hunts, a Pro Loco lunch, Alpine-style gofri waffles, and historical walks to the Menolzio hamlet, it is a day that blends flavor, nature, and the rural traditions of the Susa Valley.

A spring celebration in the heart of the Susa Valley

The Spring Fair and Bean Festival in Mattie, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin nestled on the sunny slopes of the Susa Valley in Piedmont, are among the most cherished spring events in the region. Organized by the Mattie Pro Loco, the event turns the entire village into a large open-air market for a day, where the flavors of the land meet the joy of gathering after the winter.

The Mattie bean, the absolute star

The heart of the festival is the Mattie bean, one of the most precious local products of the Susa Valley. Cultivated for generations on the village terraces, it comes in various varieties and has always been linked to local peasant cuisine. During the day, producers display their legumes, ready to be cooked according to traditional recipes, alongside alpine cheeses, artisanal cured meats, jams, and local wines.

Stalls, nurseries, and seed swapping

From the early hours of the morning, the streets of the historic center host stalls featuring local products, nurseries, flowers, and handicrafts. It is the ideal occasion for gardening enthusiasts, who can receive cultivation advice and pick up free Baracafè seeds. The traditional free exchange of seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and seedlings among visitors is also a highlight.

Activities for everyone

  • Treasure hunts for children and adults, organized by "Nel bosco con Helix," to discover the most picturesque corners of the area
  • Spring lunch by the Pro Loco featuring traditional dishes
  • The famous Alpine gofri, a typical valley specialty
  • The "Gocce di Ghiaccio" (Ice Drops) photo exhibition by Claudio Rovere
  • A historical walk toward the Menolzio hamlet, through ancient chestnut groves and medieval landmarks

A village to discover

The festival is also an invitation to explore Mattie and its surroundings: the historic center, the Church of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, the hamlets scattered on the slopes, and the trails overlooking the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Natural Park. An authentic celebration where the promotion of small producers and the preservation of local traditions merge into a single day of festivities for the entire Susa Valley.
