The spring celebration of the Susa Valley village and its signature bean
The Spring Fair and Bean Festival in Mattie, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin nestled on the sunny slopes of the Susa Valley in Piedmont, are among the most cherished spring events in the region. Organized by the Mattie Pro Loco, the event turns the entire village into a large open-air market for a day, where the flavors of the land meet the joy of gathering after the winter.
The heart of the festival is the Mattie bean, one of the most precious local products of the Susa Valley. Cultivated for generations on the village terraces, it comes in various varieties and has always been linked to local peasant cuisine. During the day, producers display their legumes, ready to be cooked according to traditional recipes, alongside alpine cheeses, artisanal cured meats, jams, and local wines.
From the early hours of the morning, the streets of the historic center host stalls featuring local products, nurseries, flowers, and handicrafts. It is the ideal occasion for gardening enthusiasts, who can receive cultivation advice and pick up free Baracafè seeds. The traditional free exchange of seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and seedlings among visitors is also a highlight.
The festival is also an invitation to explore Mattie and its surroundings: the historic center, the Church of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, the hamlets scattered on the slopes, and the trails overlooking the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Natural Park. An authentic celebration where the promotion of small producers and the preservation of local traditions merge into a single day of festivities for the entire Susa Valley.
On April 12, 2026, Mattie transformed into a festive village for the Spring Fair and the 2nd Bean Festival. From the morning, the streets of the center hosted stalls of local products, nurseries, and handicrafts, with the Mattie bean taking center stage alongside local cheeses, cured meats, and wines.
Mattie is located in the Susa Valley, in the province of Turin. By car, it can be reached via the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway (Susa/Bussoleno exit) by following the signs for Mattie. By train, the nearest station is Bussoleno, on the Turin-Modane line.
The event takes place on a spring day, typically in April. Stalls open early in the morning.
For the Pro Loco lunch and guided walks, booking via the official Mattie Pro Loco contacts is recommended. Comfortable clothing and suitable shoes are advised for the walk to the Menolzio hamlet.
