The festival celebrating Orbassano's horticultural excellence, a Slow Food Presidium
The Red Celery Festival is the most anticipated autumn event in Orbassano, a town in the Province of Turin on the outskirts of the Piedmontese capital. Every October, the event highlights the territory's iconic vegetable: the Red Celery, a local variety with a characteristic deep red color and a delicate flavor with a recognizable note of almond. Grown in the countryside around the city, it has been a Slow Food Presidium since 2010, a recognition that protects its rural tradition and biodiversity.
The heart of the festival is the large food and wine market, which fills Piazza Umberto I and the streets of the center. The 'Eccellenze in Piazza' (Excellence in the Square) area brings together Slow Food Presidia, Maestri del Gusto, producers from the Earth Markets, the 'Paniere dei Prodotti Tipici' (Basket of Typical Products) of the Province of Turin, and the Stupinigi supply chain with the DeCo label. Alongside the food stands, you will find DOP and IGP products, artisans, and hobbyists, in a journey that showcases the agri-food quality of Piedmont.
Tastings are the stars of the show: at the Red Celery Flavor Atelier, managed by the Orbassano Red Celery Association, you can sample recipes that highlight the vegetable. The Aperisedano is unmissable—an aperitif based on red celery with free tastings that accompanies visitors throughout the day.
The festival is not just about gastronomy: the center of Orbassano hosts theatrical performances, shows dedicated to local history, street entertainment, and spaces for artists and creative artisans. For children, there are playful activities such as a pedal car track, creative workshops, and animated readings, making the event suitable for the whole family.
Organized by Confesercenti of Turin and Province – West Zone Orbassano with the Municipality of Orbassano, the Red Celery Festival is one of the most deep-rooted food and wine festivals in the Turin metropolitan area, capable of combining the promotion of an identity-defining product with a village celebration, in a weekend that attracts visitors from all over Piedmont.
