About Speck und Genuss

Speck und Genuss is a two-day gastronomic festival held every October in the Bergerplatz of Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalena), in Val di Funes, at the foot of the Odle peaks. The event celebrates South Tyrolean Speck PGI and the valley's rustic flavors: speck platters, rye bread, Tirtlen, and a rich farmers' market featuring local produce and crafts, all accompanied by traditional South Tyrolean music. Organized by the ASV Amateursportverein Villnöß, it is a key autumn event in the Municipality of Funes, in the province of Bolzano.

The Speck Festival in Val di Funes

Speck und Genuss is the gastronomic event that celebrates South Tyrolean Speck PGI and the rural culture of Val di Funes every autumn. The festival takes place on the Bergerplatz, the square of the small village of Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalena), one of the most photographed spots in the Dolomites, framed by the spires of the Odle group. For two full days, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the village transforms into an open-air lounge where you can taste, purchase, and learn about traditional South Tyrolean products.

Speck, rustic bread, and Tirtlen

The absolute star is speck, the smoked and cured ham that is the iconic product of South Tyrol. At the festival stalls, you can enjoy platters of speck accompanied by fragrant rustic rye bread (Bauernbrot) and Tirtlen, the typical fried pastries filled with spinach or sauerkraut that are beloved in the local valleys. There is also no shortage of alpine cheeses, jams, apple juices, and other specialties that tell the story of the deep bond between this mountain community and its land.

The farmers' market and the atmosphere

Alongside the culinary delights, Speck und Genuss hosts a lively farmers' market with stalls featuring typical products, local crafts, and traditional handiwork. The event is enlivened by traditional South Tyrolean music, with bands and groups performing throughout the two days, creating a festive and convivial atmosphere. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the genuine hospitality of the valley and meet local producers.

A community-organized event

The festival is promoted by the ASV Amateursportverein Villnöß, the local sports association that involves the entire community in its organization. Like many village festivals in South Tyrol, Speck und Genuss combines the pleasure of good food with a sense of belonging and support for the activities of the Municipality of Funes, in the province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.

Why visit Val di Funes in autumn

October is one of the most enchanting times to discover Val di Funes: the forests turn gold, the Odle peaks stand out against the clear sky, and autumn flavors are at their peak. Combining a visit to Speck und Genuss with a walk to the famous church of San Giovanni in Ranui or along the scenic Adolf Munkel trail means experiencing the most authentic essence of this corner of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.
