The biggest market of the year in Ortisei, Val Gardena
The "Segra Sacun" is the most important and largest traditional market of the year in Ortisei (St. Ulrich), located in the heart of Val Gardena, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). It takes place every year on the Monday following the St. James festival, when the entire pedestrian center of the village transforms into a large open-air market with numerous stalls.
The "Segra Sacun" originated as a seasonal exchange market: in the mountain farming economy, it marked the time when shepherds returned from summer pastures and farmers had just finished the harvest. It was an opportunity to trade goods, livestock, and rural tools, but also a fundamental religious, economic, and social event that set the rhythm of life in the valley. The religious festival is held at the Church of St. James, the oldest in Val Gardena, accessible only on foot from the hamlet of the same name in Ortisei.
Today, the "Segra Sacun" offers a wide assortment: local culinary specialties, artisanal products, clothing, household goods, and antiques. The stalls enliven the entire pedestrian center of Ortisei, attracting residents and visitors from across the valley and beyond. It is a perfect opportunity to savor the authentic atmosphere of a mountain village market.
The most characteristic element of the "Segra Sacun" is the custom of decorated pears: according to an ancient tradition, girls and women are gifted pears adorned with colorful ribbons as a sign of affection. Originally, farmers offered these pears to the laborers who had helped with the haymaking, and the number of pears carried a specific meaning. Over time, the custom took on a romantic value: the festival, the market, and the evening dances (the "bal de Sacun") represented a true "marriage market," an ideal occasion to meet and find a partner. Among the typical flavors of the day, the tripe soup (the "saura") stands out as a dish tied to the celebration.
The "Segra Sacun" remains one of the most cherished autumn events in Val Gardena: an occasion that combines faith, tradition, commerce, and conviviality, preserving the Ladin identity of Ortisei and its hamlet of St. James. Admission to the market is free.
The 2026 "Segra Sacun" takes place on Monday, October 12, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the village center of Ortisei. As every year, the market follows the St. James festival and fills the entire pedestrian area with the stalls of the largest traditional market in Val Gardena. Between local gastronomic products, crafts, and antiques, the ancient custom of pears decorated with colorful ribbons gifted to women will not be missing. Free admission.
