The gastronomic festival in the village of Santo Stefano di Briga, featuring Messina specialties and the Feast of Saint John
The Sopranoti Flavors Festival takes place in Santo Stefano di Briga, a village in the Municipality of Messina located about 13 kilometers south of the city center, in a valley crossed by the Santo Stefano stream. The inhabitants are known as Sopranoti, from the ancient name of Santo Stefano Suprano: the term 'Soprano' refers to the village's higher elevation compared to the neighboring Santo Stefano Medio and Santa Margherita. The festival was born as part of the celebrations for Saint John the Baptist, the village's patron saint, traditionally honored on the Sunday following June 24th.
The heart of the event is the tasting of typical products from Messina's gastronomy, served in an intimate and informal open-air setting. Among the star dishes are the Sopranote scacciate (chiacciate), a typical local preparation, fried pidoni, macaroni with tomato sauce, pane cunsatu (dressed bread), and the inevitable crespelle, along with traditional desserts. It is a simple, honest cuisine made of recognizable flavors that tells the story of a village deeply connected to the land and its family recipes.
Beyond the food, the evening features live music and entertainment that turn the village streets into a meeting place for residents and visitors alike. It is the perfect occasion for those seeking an authentic experience, far from the crowded events of Messina city: you eat outdoors, listen to good music, and soak up the warmth of a community that opens its doors to its guests.
The Sopranoti Flavors Festival is designed as a simple, budget-friendly evening suitable for families. Included in the summer festival calendar of the Province of Messina and Sicily, it represents one of those local gatherings that preserve the territory's gastronomic and folk heritage, celebrating the hamlet of Santo Stefano di Briga and its most cherished traditions.
