The Saint George the Martyr Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Monforte San Giorgio, a small village perched at an altitude of 287 meters in the Niceto Valley, on the foothills of the Peloritani mountains, in the province of Messina, Sicily. The devotion to Saint George has roots in the Norman era and has accompanied the community's life for centuries: the mother church, adorned with a rich late-Gothic portal from 1507, is dedicated to the patron saint and houses the statue carried in the procession.

The grand outdoor celebration in August

The Monforte calendar features two distinct moments dedicated to the patron saint: the liturgical feast on April 23rd and the grand outdoor festival, held on the first Sunday of August. The latter draws the entire community together, including emigrants who return to the village for the occasion. The highlight is the procession of the statue of Saint George the Martyr through the streets of the historic center, a maze of medieval alleys and squares. The procession, led by confraternities and accompanied by a brass band, religious chants, and the traditional shower of colorful paper, winds through the streets at sunset, representing the spiritual heart of the entire festival.

A week of festivities

Surrounding the Sunday of the solemnity is an entire week of secular events that primarily animate Piazza IV Novembre. The program, curated each year by local associations and the municipality, alternates dance performances, traditional local theater, concerts, tournaments, and gastronomic gatherings open to all. The square is illuminated with festive lights and becomes the village's living room, where religious celebration intertwines with conviviality and folklore.

The Warm Bread Festival

Among the most cherished traditions is the Warm Bread Festival, where bread is prepared by local women following an ancient recipe and enjoyed with local wine. It is a ritual that speaks to the rural identity of this corner of the Peloritani and, along with the music in the square, completes the patronal festival experience.
