The Christmas Village, markets, and lights bringing the city on the Strait to life from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany

Christmas in Messina is the grand collection of events that brings the capital of the Strait to life every year from December 8th through Epiphany. Promoted by the Municipality of Messina, the program transforms the city's main squares and parks into a trail of lights, music, and traditions, with the Christmas Village in Piazza Cairoli serving as the beating heart of the festivities. It is one of the most cherished appointments on the Sicily holiday calendar, drawing families, visitors, and tourists during the most magical time of the year.
The centerpiece of the festivities is the Christmas Village set up in Piazza Cairoli and along the Viale San Martino pedestrian area. With wooden huts, rides for little ones, reindeer, and light installations, the square becomes a small outpost of the North Pole. Here, Christmas parades, shows, games for children, and artistic performances take place, featuring the "A Stage for Everyone" format, which gives space to young talents, musical groups, and local dance schools.
The Christmas markets are among the most beloved attractions: the wooden stalls, located between Piazza Cairoli and the area next to the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, offer crafts, gift ideas, local products, and traditional Sicilian sweets. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Messina's specialties and local craftsmanship while strolling through holiday lights and scents.
The atmosphere spreads throughout the city thanks to the "Wonders between Lights and Magic" initiative, which illuminates city villas and parks such as Villa Dante, Villa Sabin, Villa Mazzini, Parco Aldo Moro, and the Pineta di Montepiselli with light installations, themed paths, and outdoor shows. The tree-lighting ceremonies in the main squares officially kick off the holiday season.
Alongside the popular festivities, the Messina Christmas maintains its deep religious roots. On December 8th, the age-old Procession of the Silver Simulacrum of the Immaculate Conception takes place, while on December 25th, the Procession of the Baby Jesus is renewed—a tradition with centuries-old roots in Messina. In the districts of Castanea and Curcuraci, evocative living nativity scenes come to life.
Concerts, shows at the Palacultura, folk groups, bagpipers, and roaming performances complete a widespread program that involves all of Messina, the capital city of the province of the same name in Sicily. From the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, the Messina Christmas is an invitation to experience the holidays through tradition, music, and conviviality.
The official program for Christmas in Messina 2026 has not yet been published. Based on previous editions, events are expected to enliven the city center starting from December 8th, with the Christmas Village at Piazza Cairoli, craft and local product markets, illuminations in city villas, and the age-old processions of the Immaculate Conception and the Baby Jesus. Dates and the full calendar will be announced by the Municipality of Messina in the weeks leading up to the holidays.
Events take place in the center of Messina: Piazza Cairoli, Viale San Martino, Piazza Duomo, Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, and the main city villas (Villa Dante, Villa Mazzini, Parco Aldo Moro).
Messina is accessible by train (Messina Centrale station), by car via the A20/A18 motorway, and by ferry across the Strait. The city center and Piazza Cairoli are easily reachable on foot from the station and the port area.
The Christmas Village, markets, and lighting displays in the squares and villas are open to the public and free of charge.
