A Sunday tradition in the heart of Giostra

The Messina Flea Market is one of the most beloved and popular events in the Strait city. Every Sunday morning, stalls are set up in the former Mandalari area on Viale Giostra, located in the Giostra district in the north of Messina, Sicily. Known by locals as "the souk" or simply "the flea market," it is a place where time seems to slow down among precious knick-knacks, family memories, and small treasures waiting to be rediscovered.

What you can find at the stalls

The market brings together about a hundred stalls managed by private, non-professional vendors who display second-hand items in good condition. While strolling through the stalls, you can find:

• period furniture and furnishings, antiques, and modern collectibles;
• vintage clothing and accessories;
• books, magazines, comics, and collectible vinyl records;
• musical instruments, tools, and small equipment;
• tableware, ornaments, and curiosities from days gone by.

According to municipal regulations, exhibitors must certify that they are not commercial entrepreneurs, guarantee the origin of their goods, and keep items in perfect condition; merchandise must be displayed on tables rather than on the ground, in respect of decorum and waste management.

A market with a turbulent history

The Flea Market has been a part of Sunday life in Messina for years, having undergone several relocations. Following the pandemic, the reopening in the former Mandalari area led to the creation of a management committee among the vendors for self-regulation. After a temporary move to Piazza Lo Sardo, the market returned permanently to the former Mandalari area on Viale Giostra in September 2022, a location that offers more exhibition space and accommodates a larger number of vendors. Despite some periodic interruptions related to space management and hygiene conditions, an agreement between the Municipality of Messina and the traders ensures regular opening every Sunday.
