The Sunday market for second-hand goods, vintage finds, and antiques in the Giostra district
The Messina Flea Market is one of the most beloved and popular events in the Strait city. Every Sunday morning, stalls are set up in the former Mandalari area on Viale Giostra, located in the Giostra district in the north of Messina, Sicily. Known by locals as "the souk" or simply "the flea market," it is a place where time seems to slow down among precious knick-knacks, family memories, and small treasures waiting to be rediscovered.
The market brings together about a hundred stalls managed by private, non-professional vendors who display second-hand items in good condition. While strolling through the stalls, you can find:
According to municipal regulations, exhibitors must certify that they are not commercial entrepreneurs, guarantee the origin of their goods, and keep items in perfect condition; merchandise must be displayed on tables rather than on the ground, in respect of decorum and waste management.
The Flea Market has been a part of Sunday life in Messina for years, having undergone several relocations. Following the pandemic, the reopening in the former Mandalari area led to the creation of a management committee among the vendors for self-regulation. After a temporary move to Piazza Lo Sardo, the market returned permanently to the former Mandalari area on Viale Giostra in September 2022, a location that offers more exhibition space and accommodates a larger number of vendors. Despite some periodic interruptions related to space management and hygiene conditions, an agreement between the Municipality of Messina and the traders ensures regular opening every Sunday.
Visiting the Flea Market means immersing yourself in an authentic and popular corner of Messina, far from the classic tourist circuits. It is a place of social interaction where collectors, vintage enthusiasts, and curious passersby meet among the stalls in the northern zone, just a stone's throw from the waters of the Strait. It is an ideal experience for those who love to find the right item at the right price, but also for those who wish to discover the daily and genuine face of this Sicilian city.
The 2026 edition of the Messina Flea Market confirms the Sunday formula that makes it a reference point for the people of Messina. Every Sunday morning, roughly from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the former Mandalari area on Viale Giostra hosts about a hundred stalls featuring second-hand goods, vintage items, and antiques.
Among the stalls, you can find period furniture and furnishings, vintage clothing and accessories, books, vinyl records, musical instruments, and small collectible items. The operators, gathered in a management committee, ensure order, decorum, and the quality of the displayed goods. As this is a recurring market, there is no specific program of events: the charm lies in searching for the right item, week after week, in the heart of the northern part of the Strait city.
Every Sunday morning, roughly from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM (with reduced hours during certain periods). It is recommended to arrive in the morning to see the stalls fully set up.
