A food and wine journey through cellars, catoj, and traditions in the village of Monforte San Giorgio
The Giro delle Botti e dei Catoi is one of the most characteristic food and wine events of the autumn in the province of Messina. It takes place in the heart of the historic center of Monforte San Giorgio, a small hillside village in northeastern Sicily, where every November, alleys, courtyards, and ancient dwellings open to visitors for a journey of flavors, music, and tradition.
The central theme of the festival is the catoj, the traditional cellars and workshops carved into the ground floors of the village houses, once used to store wine and local produce. During the Giro, these rooms come back to life: along with local wineries, they host tastings of wines and typical products from the Terre di Monforte, ranging from cheeses and cured meats to honey and preserves, in an itinerary that weaves together the tangible and intangible heritage of the town.
Along the village streets, visitors are accompanied by storytellers, friscalettari (flute players), and giaramiddari (traditional musicians), as well as folk groups that enliven the squares with dances, music, and ancient Sicilian folk songs. It is an opportunity to rediscover the colors, scents, and flavors of a bygone era in an authentic and convivial atmosphere.
The event also features the FotoGiro delle Botti photography contest, which rewards the best shots dedicated to the festival; by tradition, the winner receives a supply of wine from local cellars.
Organized by the Katàbba Historical, Cultural and Artistic Association, which has been committed to promoting local traditions for years, the Giro delle Botti e dei Catoi is designed for everyone: the entire route is free of architectural barriers and accessible to people with disabilities. The event has established itself as a classic appointment in the Sicilian autumn calendar, attracting visitors from across the province of Messina and the entire region, helping to promote the food, wine, and cultural identity of Monforte San Giorgio.
The 2026 event is set for Saturday, November 16, and Sunday, November 17 in the historic center of Monforte San Giorgio, in the province of Messina. Once again this year, the village will come alive with the customary food and wine trail through cellars, courtyards, and ancient catoj, dedicated to the wines and typical products of the Terre di Monforte.
The elements that characterize the event are confirmed: tastings with the traditional wine glass along the route, the accompaniment of storytellers, flute players, and folk groups, and the FotoGiro delle Botti photography contest. The complete program, including times, locations, and guests, will be announced by the Katàbba association closer to the event.
Monforte San Giorgio is located on the hills west of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (take the exit towards the Tyrrhenian area) and then via provincial roads leading inland. The reference train station is Monforte-Pellegrino on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you can continue to the hillside center.
Entry to the trail requires the purchase of a ticket/tasting kit including a traditional wine glass, which is necessary to sample wines and local products at the various stations along the route. For updated rates and details, we recommend checking the official channels of the Katàbba association.
We recommend comfortable shoes for walking through the historic center's alleys and clothing suitable for the autumn season. The entire route is accessible and free of architectural barriers.
