The patronal feast of the Gimello hamlet, blending faith, tradition, and the flavors of the Peloritani mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Gimello is a small hillside hamlet in the municipality of Rometta, in the province of Messina. Situated at an altitude of just over 400 meters, it is entirely immersed in the green woods of the Peloritani mountains. To the west, the landscape is dominated by the promontory of Milazzo and the ancient hermitage of Crispino. It is a village with ancient origins: tradition holds that its roots date back to the Norman period, and the name itself is said to preserve the memory of an old medieval village.
Every year, in the heart of summer, this community of a few hundred inhabitants gathers around its protector, San Rocco, for a patronal feast that stands as one of the most cherished events on the local calendar. It is one of those authentic village festivals, far from the crowds of major tourist events, where religious devotion and popular conviviality blend naturally.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession of the statue of San Rocco through the streets of Gimello, traditionally held on August 16th. In the days leading up to it, the saint's effigy is moved from its usual location to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where it remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful until the day of the procession.
A rich secular program, organized with great dedication by the San Rocco Association, unfolds around the liturgical events. The village square comes alive with briscola tournaments, food and wine evenings, popular games like tombola, and plenty of live music, culminating in the fireworks that close the festivities.
An essential part of the festival is the gastronomic dimension: at the village tables, you can taste traditional dishes from the Peloritani countryside, from pani cunzatu (seasoned bread) to grilled sausage sandwiches, roasted chestnuts, and excellent new wine, often accompanied by macaroni with meat sauce offered to participants. It is a festival that tells the story of a small Sicilian village's identity and its people's deep bond with their roots through its flavors.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival in Gimello have not yet been published by the San Rocco Association. As this is an annual patronal feast, it is likely that the 2026 festivities will again be concentrated in the second half of August, with the traditional procession of the saint's effigy on the 16th. The detailed program, featuring food and wine evenings, tournaments, popular games, and live music, is generally released in the weeks leading up to the festival. This page will be updated as soon as official dates are available.
