The open-air summer theatre festival of Montedoro
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Summer Theatres is the open-air theatre festival that enlivens the town of Montedoro every summer, a village in the Caltanissetta province nestled in the Sicilian hinterland. Promoted by the municipal administration as part of the Montedoro Summer programme, the event features a series of evening shows between July and August, designed for the entire community with a focus on showcasing local talent and regional companies.
The heart of the festival is the Villa Meyzieu Amphitheatre, the green space on Via Giuseppe Pitrè that becomes a natural stage for summer nights. Here, starting at 9:00 PM, the audience enjoys performances in the open air, in the informal and familiar atmosphere that is the hallmark of village summers in inland Sicily.
The programme alternates between dialect comedies, theatrical storytelling, and street theatre, performed by Sicilian companies. Protagonists of recent editions include the Thèatron company, the Teatro Stabile Nisseno, and the Gocce di Sicilia company from Castrofilippo, with brilliant titles such as "Morto, vivo e assicurato," "Maliditta Miseria," "Intrighi, presenze e tarocchi," and "Due mariti per due cozze." Alongside prose theatre, there is space for street art and contemporary circus performances that also engage younger audiences.
More than just a season of shows, Summer Theatres is an identity-defining event for Montedoro, the "town of sulphur mines and stars." The theatrical evenings are part of a summer full of cultural initiatives that draw residents and returning emigrants to the square, strengthening the community's bond with their village. The free nature of the events and the intimate scale of the town make the festival an authentic experience of lesser-known Sicily, far from the major tourist circuits.
The festival traditionally takes place between the second half of July and early August, with performances concentrated on weekends. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the municipal administration: the programme is usually published on the Montedoro Municipality website in the weeks leading up to the start.
