The Madonna della Cava Festival is the most cherished event in the religious calendar of Pietraperzia, a town perched in the hills of the Enna province, in Sicily. Maria Santissima della Cava is venerated as the town's primary patron saint, alongside the co-patron Saint Roch, and a tradition that has remained unbroken for centuries revolves around her, marked by the rites of the Marian fortnight and solemn mid-August celebrations.
The origin of the cult is linked to a captivating legend: a mute man from Trapani dreamt of the Madonna, who revealed the exact location where her image could be found. Upon digging at that spot in Contrada Cava, the man recovered the sacred icon and immediately regained his speech. The painting, depicting the Virgin breastfeeding the Child, shows Byzantine iconographic influences and, according to historical records, was already venerated before 1222. The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Cava, located in Contrada Cava about four kilometers from the town center, was significantly expanded in 1721 and restored in 2014.
The celebrations begin with the Marian fortnight, fifteen days of spiritual preparation from July 31st to August 14th. Every evening, at the church of Santa Maria di Gesรน and the Sanctuary in Contrada Cava, the Rosary and the Supplication are recited, and Holy Mass is celebrated, animated by various local associations and church communities. In parallel, from August 7th to 15th, the novena of Saint Roch takes place, testifying to the close bond between the two patrons of Pietraperzia.
The highlight occurs on the night between August 14th and 15th, the eve of the Assumption. On the evening of the 14th, the Sanctuary hosts the solemn Vespers and, late at night, the evocative solemn Mass celebrated in the outdoor square, traditionally presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Piazza Armerina. It is a vigil of great intensity that draws faithful and pilgrims from neighboring towns.
August 15th is the day of the historic Palio: in the morning, the marching band parades through the main streets of the town, while the Palio of the Madonna is collected from the family that guards it to be taken to the church. In the evening, the Palio is carried in procession through the streets of Pietraperzia, followed by the act of entrustment to the Madonna and the Eucharistic blessing. During these same days, festivities for Saint Roch are renewed, with processions on August 15th and 16th.
The entire town comes alive around the religious celebrations: stalls and a small fair are set up along the streets, families reunite, and emigrants from Pietraperzia return to ensure they do not miss the appointment with their patron saint. The devotion to the Madonna della Cava also manifests in pilgrimages on foot to the Sanctuary, during which the Rosary is recited in the characteristic local Pietraperzia dialect, and in the initiatives of local associations, such as those of truckers and tractor drivers, who keep the ancient tradition of the 'Saturday of the Carters' alive. A festival that blends faith, identity, and a sense of community in the most authentic heart of Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Cava Festival in Pietraperzia, in the province of Enna, is expected to follow the usual mid-August tradition. As of now, the precise dates and the official program have not yet been released. Based on previous years, the celebrations should include the Marian fortnight (from July 31st to August 14th), the solemn midnight mass on August 14th at the Sanctuary in Contrada Cava, and the historic Palio procession through the town streets on August 15th. We invite you to consult the official channels of the Municipality of Pietraperzia and the parish for updates.
