The seaside marathon of Marsala, between the Stagnone Lagoon and the historic center
The Sigel Marsala Marathon is one of Sicily's newest marathons: the inaugural edition took place in April 2025 and immediately drew hundreds of participants, confirming the sporting and tourist appeal of Marsala, in the province of Trapani. Organized by ASD Polisportiva Marsala Doc, the event combines road running with the discovery of a territory famous for its fortified wine, salt pans, and the Stagnone lagoon.
The course unfolds along the Marsala seafront and its most evocative views, crossing the Stagnone Nature Reserve—a lagoon area nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site and overlooking the island of Mozia—before returning toward the historic center and extending south into the territory of the neighboring municipality of Petrosino. Both the marathon (42.195 km) and half marathon (21.097 km) share the same route, designed to showcase the coastal landscape of Western Sicily.
Since its debut, the Marsala Marathon has attracted runners from numerous European and non-European countries, promoting the message of peace and cultural exchange embodied in its subtitle, "Marsala, crossroads of the Mediterranean." Held every spring, the event is part of the rich calendar of activities that animate Marsala and the province of Trapani, offering runners and their companions the chance to combine their passion for running with the discovery of the food, wine, and natural heritage of Sicily.
The second Sigel Marsala Marathon was held on April 26, 2026, with the marathon and half marathon starting at 8:45 AM from Piazza della Vittoria. For 2026, the route was redesigned into a single-loop course that crossed the seafront, the Stagnone Reserve, and the southern territory up to the municipality of Petrosino.
The event awarded the FIDAL Individual Master Regional Champion titles for the marathon distance, while the half marathon served as a regional Grand Prix event. Custom medals signed by Vincenzo Maggio and technical vests were provided to all participants.
