The festival celebrating the De.Co. pastry of Villalfonsina, featuring flavors, traditions, and music
The Sfogliatella Evening is the annual appointment that, at the start of every summer, draws hundreds of visitors to the village of Villalfonsinaโa small town in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Abruzzo region's 'Colline dei Trabocchi'โattracted by the aroma of the local specialty. Organized by the Pro Loco Villalfonsina APS with the patronage of UNPLI and the municipal administration, the event transforms the village streets and squares into a journey of taste, music, and conviviality.
The absolute star is the Villalfonsina sfogliatella, recognized with the De.Co. (Municipal Designation) label. Distinct from the famous Neapolitan version, the Villalfonsina sfogliatella is a rich and indulgent pastry filled with Montepulciano grape jam, black cherries, cooked grape must, almonds, honey, and chocolate. As the Pro Loco notes, this is a recipe that was once prepared in almost every family in the village, and the festival has the merit of having saved it from oblivion, bringing it back to the heart of community life.
In addition to the sfogliatella, the stalls set up along the village streets offer a rich assortment of traditional Abruzzese dishes. Among the specialties to enjoy are:
The evening heats up with two entertainment hubs. In Piazza Roma, there is space for ballroom dancing and group dances with Carmine and Daniela, while along Corso Adriatico, live music from the band I Re Quieti keeps the crowd entertained well past midnight. There is also a recreational area dedicated to children and the extraordinary opening of the ML47 Ethnographic Museum, which allows visitors to discover the farming and artisanal history of the area.
The Sfogliatella Evening is much more than a food festival: it is a moment of identity for Villalfonsina and the entire Chieti district. Managed by Pro Loco volunteers, the event combines the culinary experience with a commitment to solidarity, featuring charitable initiatives to support the local area. An unmissable appointment for those who want to discover the authentic Abruzzo, that of small villages, genuine flavors, and warm hospitality.
The 23rd edition of the Sfogliatella Evening was held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM. Alongside the De.Co. sfogliatella, the stalls offered ravioli with ventricina, pallotte cacio e ove, arrosticini, and porchetta. In Piazza Roma, there was ballroom and group dancing with Carmine and Daniela, while on Corso Adriatico, the band I Re Quieti performed live until well past midnight. A children's area and the extraordinary opening of the ML47 Ethnographic Museum were also featured.
Villalfonsina is located in the province of Chieti, just a few kilometers from the Trabocchi Coast. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro or Vasto Nord exit) by following the signs for the town. The nearest train station is Casalbordino-Pollutri on the Adriatic line.
The event takes place in the evening starting at 7:00 PM, with food stalls and shows along Piazza Roma and Corso Adriatico. Admission to the festival area is free; dishes and pastries can be purchased at the stalls.
