As winter arrives, the historic center of Atessa, one of the most charming villages in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, dresses up for the "Christmas in the Heart of the Historic Center" initiative. Promoted by the municipal administration through the Vivi Atessa project, the Christmas program enlivens the town's squares, main streets, and medieval alleys for over a month with a dense calendar of free events dedicated to residents and visitors alike.
The heart of the event beats in Piazza Garibaldi, where an ice skating rink is set up every year and Santa's House comes to life, a favorite destination for children. Other squares in the historic center, from Piazza Oberdan to Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, host wooden market stalls, the lighting of the Christmas tree, and the traditional Nativity Scene Museum, a free exhibition path featuring artistic nativity scenes, craftsmanship, and spirituality.
Among the most anticipated events is Choco Christmas, a delicious market dedicated to artisanal chocolate, local products, and sweet Christmas creations, complete with tastings and workshops. Taste is also the protagonist of Calici in Cittร (Goblets in the City), the food and wine tours that accompany citizens and tourists through wine, local specialties, and music, as well as the Coldiretti Abruzzo Christmas village, featuring zero-mile products.
The Teatro Antonio Jorio provides the backdrop for the musical programming, ranging from classical music concerts to jazz events: Atessa is, in fact, the hometown of saxophonist Max Ionata, one of the most acclaimed on the international scene, who stars in exceptional evenings. There is no shortage of street performances with artists, fire-eaters, luminous stilt walkers, and dancers enlivening the evenings. The grand finale takes place on January 6th with the arrival of the traditional Befana in flight in Piazza Garibaldi, bidding farewell to young and old as the festivities conclude.
Thanks to the combination of popular tradition, gastronomy, and entertainment, "Christmas in the Heart of the Historic Center" has become a staple of the Atessa winter calendar and one of the richest Christmas programs in the Sangro area. Its free format and family-friendly atmosphere make it an ideal opportunity to discover the charm of this Abruzzese village during the most magical time of the year.
The Christmas program of the Municipality of Atessa returns, as every year, to animate the historic center during the holidays. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: based on previous editions, craft markets, the Choco Christmas chocolate market, the ice skating rink in Piazza Garibaldi, Santa's House, the Nativity Scene Museum, the Calici in Cittร food and wine tours, concerts at the Teatro Antonio Jorio, and the arrival of the Befana in flight on January 6th are expected. The updated program will be published on the official Vivi Atessa channels.
Atessa is located in the Val di Sangro, in the province of Chieti. By car, it can be reached from the Val di Sangro exit of the A14 motorway, then following signs for the historic center. The reference railway station is Atessa (Sangritana line). The nearest airport is Pescara.
All events in the Christmas program are free. For information and the updated schedule: Municipality of Atessa, tel. +39 0872 853101, e-mail [email protected], website viviatessa.it, and Vivi Atessa social media channels.
The historic center is a limited traffic zone during events: it is advisable to park in the outer areas and continue on foot. Warm clothing is recommended for the ice skating rink and outdoor evenings.
