A stroll through the olive groves of San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Walk Among the Olive Trees is a national event promoted by the National Association of Olive Oil Cities. On the last Sunday of October, it brings together over a hundred Italian olive-growing municipalities for a grand celebration of the olive landscape. In Fossacesia, a village in the province of Chieti overlooking the Costa dei Trabocchi, the initiative finds one of its most evocative settings in Abruzzo: the promontory home to the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, surrounded by thousands of olive trees, many of which are centuries old.
The route winds through the lands and paths surrounding the Benedictine monastic complex, with stops where producers and experts in Frentano and Abruzzese olive growing share the technical and historical characteristics of the region's oils. The walk, suitable for families and hikers alike, alternates panoramic views of the valley and the Adriatic Sea with opportunities to learn about the local olive heritage, with a special focus on restoring historic groves and combating the abandonment of traditional farming.
During the day, visitors can tour local oil mills to sample freshly pressed new oil, accompanied by guided tasting workshops. Traditional flavors are also on the menu: Pasta alla Trappitara, a dish deeply rooted in mill culture, and a glass of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC often conclude the walk in a convivial atmosphere. The event also offers educational activities for children, excursions, and guided tours, blending culture, nature, and gastronomy into a unique experience.
The Municipality of Fossacesia is a member of the Olive Oil Cities network and participates in the walk alongside other Abruzzese towns, sharing a message of landscape conservation and the promotion of extra virgin olive oil as a core element of Abruzzo's identity. The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, a jewel of Romanesque-Cistercian architecture overlooking the Adriatic, provides the perfect backdrop for a day that weaves together spirituality, history, and rural culture.
Participation is generally free, with potential fees for tastings and the convivial lunch. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: we recommend checking the channels of the National Association of Olive Oil Cities and the Municipality of Fossacesia as the event approaches.
