The contemporary arts festival held in the reclaimed spaces of the former Ortona zoo
ZooArt – Contemporary Arts Festival is one of the most original cultural experiences in Abruzzo. It takes place in Ortona, in the province of Chieti, within the reclaimed spaces of the former municipal zoo cages located beneath the Passeggiata Orientale, the famous viewpoint overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Founded in 2006 by the ZooArt Ortona Association, the project has transformed a degraded and abandoned urban area into a multicultural venue dedicated to contemporary art.
The city zoo, active in the 1980s, had been closed and left to decay. The association's revolutionary idea was to return these spaces to the community: the cages, once intended for animals, have become exhibition and creative environments. Instead of bars acting as boundaries, today you will find paintings, installations, sculptures, and contemporary art projects. During the restoration work, the tracks of the old funicular were also brought to light, serving as a testament to the site's historical layering.
ZooArt is not just an exhibition: it is a true widespread festival that weaves together numerous disciplines. Throughout its editions, the festival has hosted:
Having grown over the years, ZooArt has become one of the socio-cultural hearts of the Estate Ortonese, the rich summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Ortona that brings together over eighty events from July to September. The festival enhances a symbolic place in the city, where contemporary art dialogues with the sea view and the industrial memory of the area. For those visiting Abruzzo, ZooArt represents an unusual way to discover Ortona: a journey through creativity and freedom, best experienced at sunset, immersed in the unique atmosphere of a regenerated urban space.
The ZooArt 2026 festival is part of the Estate Ortonese 2026 program, promoted by the Municipality of Ortona with over eighty events spread between the center and the districts from July to September. In the reclaimed spaces beneath the Passeggiata Orientale, the contemporary art proposal continues, combining exhibitions, music, and performances.
Among the documented events, on Friday, June 26, 2026, the Talk and Vinyls series hosted the site-specific performance "Alius et idem" by artists Rossana and Teresa Coratella, with DJ Gabriele Pippo: performative painting on a large suspended canvas, sound poetry, and vinyl music, with the work exhibited until July 26. The evening was divided between musical selection and talks (7:30 PM - 8:30 PM), performance (10:00 PM), and DJ set (10:30 PM).
"Talk and Vinyls" Series – June 26, 2026
The work created during the performance remains on display in the ZooArt spaces until July 26, 2026. Further events (exhibitions, concerts, workshops) will take place throughout the Estate Ortonese until September.
ZooArt is held in the reclaimed spaces beneath the Passeggiata Orientale in Ortona (CH), in the area of the former municipal zoo cages, overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
By car: Ortona can be reached via the A14 motorway (Ortona or Val di Sangro exits). By train: the Ortona station is served by the Adriatic line. From the city center, the area can be reached on foot along the Passeggiata Orientale.
