The Marian tradition of Cefalù on the eve of the Immaculate Conception

The Serenata a Maria is a celebration of faith and tradition that gathers the faithful every year on the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Cefalù, a stunning Norman town on the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Palermo, Sicily. The event takes place at the Chiesa degli Artigianelli on Via Roma and stands as one of the most moving and well-attended moments in the city's religious calendar.
The Serenata was founded in the late 1980s by Father Antonio Guerra, a priest of the Giuseppini del Murialdo, who wished to dedicate a choral tribute to the Madonna on the eve of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the patron saint of Cefalù. Since then, the tradition has continued uninterrupted, preserved by the Parrocchia Artigianelli and entrusted to the voices of the choir, long directed by Carmelita Gennuso. The 2025 event marked the 38th edition, a testament to a legacy spanning generations of Cefalù residents.
The Serenata a Maria is more than just a concert; it is an inter-parish gathering that blends prayer, sacred music, and Marian hymns. On the evening of December 7th, the Chiesa degli Artigianelli fills with worshippers who, through music dedicated to the Virgin, prepare themselves spiritually for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The intimate and moving atmosphere is one of the most distinctive features of this event, which weaves religious observance with a strong sense of community belonging.
Due to its cultural and identity-based value, the Serenata a Maria has been inscribed in the Register of Intangible Heritage (REIS) supported by UNESCO, a recognition that cements its role as a living tradition of the Madonie region. The event is part of the Magico Natale a Cefalù (Magical Christmas in Cefalù) program, a series of holiday events promoted by the Municipality of Cefalù between December and January, helping to make the town one of the most evocative destinations in Sicily during the festive season.
The event is traditionally held on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, December 7th, in the evening. Admission is free and open to all, in keeping with the communal and devotional spirit of the occasion.
The Serenata a Maria renews the tradition of Marian devotion every year in Cefalù on the eve of the Immaculate Conception at the Chiesa degli Artigianelli. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
