The patronal feast of Santo Stefano di Camastra, in the heart of the City of Ceramics
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year on December 6th, Santo Stefano di Camastra, a renowned City of Ceramics overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Messina, commemorates its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, Bishop of Myra. The date coincides with the saint's liturgical feast and is a key milestone in the town's civil and religious calendar, traditionally marked by the closure of local offices and schools.
The heart of the celebration is the Mother Church (Chiesa Madre), dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari and overlooking Piazza Matrice in the historic center. Its origins are linked to the town's founding by the Duke of Camastra in the late 17th century. The building houses precious works of art, including a 16th-century sculpture from the Gagini school depicting the Madonna delle Grazie, venerated by the faithful as the Madonna del Latte.
Saint Nicholas, the beloved miracle-worker of the Christian East and protector of sailors, children, and pilgrims, has been the patron saint of Santo Stefano di Camastra since the community's inception. Tradition dictates that on the day of the feast, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by illuminations and the participation of the faithful. In recent years, the celebration has become more intimate, while popular devotion has increasingly focused on Maria Santissima Addolorata, the city's co-patron, who is celebrated with great solemnity on the third Sunday of September.
The Feast of Saint Nicholas is set in a territory rich in faith and tradition, at the foot of the Nebrodi Park, where the culture of artistic ceramics coexists with Sicilian popular religiosity. Despite its intimate scale, the December 6th commemoration remains a highly symbolic event for the community, an opportunity to rediscover the historical and devotional roots of Santo Stefano di Camastra.
The feast falls every year on December 6th, the day of the liturgical commemoration of Saint Nicholas of Bari. The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; it is recommended to check the channels of the Parish of San Nicolò di Bari and the Municipality of Santo Stefano di Camastra for updates.
