About Termini Living Nativity

Winding through the narrow alleys, Roman staircases, and historic churches of Termini Imerese, the Living Nativity transforms the city every Christmas into a grand stage depicting Palestine as it was two thousand years ago. With hundreds of performers, visitors embark on a two-hour journey starting from Piazza Duomo, passing through Herod's palace, the Temple of Jerusalem, the Bethlehem market, and a Roman camp, all leading to the Nativity scene. This free, deeply felt event is organized by the Comunità Ecclesiale Termitana, blending religious tradition, heritage discovery, and Christmas atmosphere.

A Nativity that becomes a city

Every December, the historic center of Termini Imerese, in the province of Palermo, transforms into the largest of nativity scenes: a living one. The Termini Imerese Living Nativity is not merely a static display, but a genuine theatrical and spiritual journey that leads spectators through the streets, staircases, and alleys of the city, reenacting the events of the Nativity as told in the Gospels. Participants are not just observers; they become witnesses, accompanied along the way by shepherds, merchants, and figures from the Palestine of two millennia ago.

The journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem

The entrance is located in Piazza Duomo, where visitors are welcomed by a reproduction of an ancient Roman gate and divided into groups of about 150 people. From here, a two-hour itinerary begins, winding through the ancient heart of the city and passing through carefully reconstructed settings: King Herod's palace, the Temple of Jerusalem, the Bethlehem market, and the Roman camp. The route concludes in the evocative Piazza delle Terme, after involving hundreds of performers including artisans, soldiers, townspeople, and tradespeople of yesteryear.

Churches and treasures of the historic center

One of the most fascinating aspects of the event is the rediscovery of the historical and religious sites of Termini Imerese. The path touches the Church of San Giacomo, the local "Spasimo" and ancient mother church, and the Church of the Annunziata, recognizable by its octagonal majolica dome, which houses the marble Nativity by Andrea Mancino (1494), considered the oldest nativity artwork in Sicily. Among staircases, narrow alleys, and palaces, the nativity becomes an opportunity to admire art and history gems often forgotten.

A community tradition

The Living Nativity is organized by the Comunità Ecclesiale Termitana together with local associations, who collaborate every year on a project with a clear missionary purpose: to bring visitors closer to the Gospel message through beauty and direct experience. The event, which reached its seventeenth edition in 2025, is now a deeply rooted appointment in the Christmas festivities of the municipality of Termini Imerese and the entire Madonie and Palermo area.

Atmosphere and tips

Admission is free, with mandatory online booking. As the route crosses staircases and steep alleys in the historic center, it is not recommended for those with mobility issues. Comfortable clothing suitable for winter evenings is advised. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is suggested to check the official website and social media channels for updates.
