The patronal feast that has united Cefalù for over three centuries

The Immaculate Conception Festival is the patronal feast of Cefalù, a stunning town in the Province of Palermo overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, famous for its Norman Cathedral, now part of the UNESCO Arab-Norman Sicily site. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception dates back to 1655, when Bishop Francesco Gisulfo, in agreement with city magistrates, established December 8th as a solemnity for the entire city. The title of Patron Saint was later officially proclaimed in 1954 by Pope Pius XII. For nearly four centuries, Cefalù has gathered around its celestial protector in a festival that blends Marian faith, popular tradition, and a deep sense of belonging.
Celebrations begin well before December 8th. From November 29th to December 7th, the novena takes place in the Cathedral Basilica, featuring the characteristic singing of the Stellario. During these days of preparation, the Rosary is recited, followed by litanies and an evening Mass animated by the city's priests and pastors. According to tradition, the festival ideally spans three days, involving the different souls of the community: the gathering of fishermen at the Marina, the tribute of farmers beneath the Rocca, and finally the great city-wide celebration on December 8th.
On the day of the Immaculate Conception, the Cathedral Basilica holds multiple Masses throughout the day. At noon, at the Church of San Pasquale—next to which stands the stele with the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception—the traditional floral tribute by the Bishop and the Mayor takes place, accompanied by the blessing of the children. In the afternoon, the procession begins, one of the most anticipated and evocative moments: the venerated icon of the Immaculate, with its blue and gold mantle and the lily of purity, travels through the streets of the historic center followed by the faithful and a brass band, in a true embrace between the city and its Patron Saint. In the evening, celebrations culminate with the solemn Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral, presided over by the Bishop of Cefalù.
December 8th also marks the start of Christmas festivities in the town: the lighting of the tree in Piazza Duomo, the inauguration of artistic nativity scenes in churches and public spaces, and the festive atmosphere that will enliven Cefalù until Epiphany. Experiencing the Immaculate Conception Festival means capturing the most authentic soul of this Sicilian town, where popular piety and the beauty of the landscape merge into a single, intense experience.
