The Saint Cecilia Festival in Santo Stefano di Camastra, in the province of Messina, is a tribute to the patron saint of music and musicians. Revived in 2024 thanks to the efforts of the S. Cecilia Musical Cultural Association, led by Vincenzo Perez, the festival renews a tradition deeply rooted in the town's rich band culture, preserved for generations and linked to the memory of Maestro Vincenzo Cecere, a central figure in the community's musical education.
The heart of the event is the gathering of marching bands from the Nebrodi area and various parts of Sicily. From the early hours of the morning, the bands, composed of musicians of all ages, traverse the streets and neighborhoods of Santo Stefano di Camastra, spreading joy and camaraderie. In recent years, participants have included groups from Santo Stefano di Camastra with their majorette squad, as well as bands from Galati Mamertino, Nicosia, Campofelice di Roccella, Castel di Lucio, and Gangi, creating a mosaic of colors, uniforms, and repertoires that transforms the village into a vibrant, town-wide celebration.
The highlight of the day is the procession of the statue of Saint Cecilia, carried on shoulders through the main streets of the historic center, accompanied by the melodies of the various bands. After the morning performances, the bands are welcomed into the different neighborhoods for social gatherings between musicians and citizens, in an atmosphere that blends faith with popular festivity.
The Saint Cecilia Festival is much more than a musical appointment; it is a defining moment for the entire community. Elders who remember the celebrations of the past, families who view the event as an unmissable tradition, and tourists captivated by the genuine atmosphere all come together in the streets of Santo Stefano di Camastra, known throughout Sicily as the city of ceramics.
