Petralilium in Praesepio is one of Sicily's most original nativity scenes, set up in Petralia Sottana, a stunning medieval village within the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo. Housed in the historic Chiesa del Monte di Pietà on Via Duomo, the display goes beyond the classic Nativity scene, using extraordinary craftsmanship to recreate the town's real-life landmarks and monuments in miniature. Stepping into the exhibit makes you feel like Gulliver in Lilliput, gazing down at a Petralia Sottana recreated stone by stone.
The path leads visitors through the iconic landmarks of this Madonie village, reproduced in scale with meticulous attention to detail:
Alongside the buildings, the nativity scene captures the daily life of the past: agricultural tools, wine barrels, and workshops featuring cobblers, blacksmiths, and carpenters. The result is a choral fresco that tells the story of Petralia Sottana's civic and rural history, passing on the warmth of life from days gone by.
First displayed in 1998, Petralilium in Praesepio began as an original interpretation of the Christmas religious event, intertwined with local society and the town's long, fascinating history. After many years of forced closure due to a landslide, the nativity scene has been reopened to the public, restoring one of its most cherished treasures to the community and its visitors.
The visit takes place within the evocative winter setting of the Madonie, amidst stone alleys, baroque churches, and the crisp air of the Sicilian mountains. Petralia Sottana, recognized as a village of great historical and artistic value, offers an intimate and authentic atmosphere during the Christmas season, far from mass tourism—ideal for those seeking a traditional Christmas in the heart of inland Sicily.
More than just an attraction, Petralilium in Praesepio is a project of collective memory curated by the Associazione Petralilium in Praesepio, which has been preserving and enriching the display for years. Visiting it means recognizing the face of the town in its miniature monuments and allowing the scenes of traditional trades to tell you the deep soul of a Madonie community tied to its roots.
For Christmas 2026, the Associazione Petralilium in Praesepio has not yet published the official opening calendar. Based on tradition, the miniature nativity scene of Petralia Sottana is set up in the Chiesa del Monte di Pietà during the Christmas period, generally between mid-December and January 6th. It is recommended to check dates and times on the association's official channels before planning your visit; however, the exhibit remains open for visits year-round by appointment.
The nativity scene is located in the Chiesa del Monte di Pietà, Via Duomo, Petralia Sottana (PA), 90027.
By car from Palermo, take the A19 motorway (exit at Tremonzelli or Scillato) and then the SS120 towards the Madonie. Petralia Sottana can also be reached by train to the Castellana-Sclafani station on the Palermo-Catania line, followed by a road connection.
During the Christmas season, approximate hours are: weekdays 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM; holidays 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The nativity scene can be visited year-round by appointment by calling +39 347 5246413.
