The nocturnal torchlight procession of ddisa in Sciara
In the heart of the Sicilian winter, the town of Sciara, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, preserves one of the oldest and most fascinating processions in the entire region. The Immaculate Conception Torchlight Procession takes place every year on the night between December 7th and 8th, honoring the Virgin Mary, who is venerated as Queen and co-patron of the community. It is a celebration deeply rooted in popular devotion, passed down through generations with unwavering participation.
According to local lore, the tradition of accompanying the Madonna's statue with torches began almost by chance: the inhabitants of Sciara descending from the slopes of Mount San Calogero needed to light their way through the darkness of the night. From that practical necessity, a collective ritual was born, which still opens the procession today and remains its most recognizable feature.
The defining characteristic of the Torchlight Procession is the unique torches used by the faithful to light the path of the vara (the processional float). These are the sciacculi, torches crafted from the inflorescences of ampelodesmos, a typical Mediterranean plant known in the Sciara dialect as ddisa. Hundreds of people, arranged in two long parallel lines, hold these burning bundles, creating a spectacular display of light that cuts through the dark streets while ancient Marian hymns echo in the air.
The day of December 8th begins in the dead of night. At 4:00 AM, the bells ring out and the local marching band parades through the streets, inviting the faithful to gather around the effigy of the Immaculate Conception at the Parish Church on Via Roma. After the festival committee distributes the torches, the solemn procession begins. The parade winds slowly through the town, ending around 6:30 AM with the return to the church and the evocative Mass of the Aurora.
The Torchlight Procession is the highlight of the Immaculate Conception festivities, organized by the Sciara Pro Loco in collaboration with the Parish of Sant'Anna and local associations, with the support of the Municipality of Sciara and the Regional Department of Tourism. The procession is surrounded by concerts, sacred music, and tastings of typical Sicilian products that bring the village to life during the festival. For those visiting Sicily in December, witnessing the Torchlight Procession means immersing oneself in an authentic ritual, far from the usual tourist circuits, where faith, folklore, and local identity blend into an unforgettable atmosphere.
The 2026 Immaculate Conception festivities in Sciara kick off on Saturday, December 6th at 7:00 PM with a concert by the Gospel Project Choir at the Church of Sant'Anna, in Piazza Castelreale: an interdenominational and multi-ethnic ensemble of 47 members, directed by Maestro Pietro Marchese on the piano, performing traditional and contemporary gospel and spirituals. The concert is followed by a tasting of typical Sicilian products.
The heart of the festival remains the Torchlight Procession: on the night between December 7th and 8th, at 4:00 AM, the bells and the band call the faithful to the Parish Church on Via Roma. After the distribution of the ampelodesmos torches, the solemn procession of the Immaculate Conception statue winds through the town, illuminated by the torches, until returning to the church around 6:30 AM for the Mass of the Aurora. The event is free and promoted by the Pro Loco of Sciara and the Parish of Sant'Anna with the support of the Municipality of Sciara.
