Allegorical floats, masked groups, and the Alesio mask in the heart of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese
The Sarno Carnival is one of the most anticipated popular events in Campania and the quintessential identity-defining appointment for the Municipality of Sarno, in the province of Salerno. For over a month, between late January and mid-March, the town's streets are filled with allegorical floats, masked groups, choreography, and music: a festival built from the ground up, where every neighborhood and association brings months of hard work to the streets.
The event is organized by the Sarno Carnival Association, chaired by Giovanni Agovino, with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Sarno led by Mayor Francesco Squillante. It is not just simple entertainment: as the organizers themselves point out, the Carnival is the moment when the town recognizes itself, reconnects with its districts, and brings them into dialogue along the same route.
The true protagonist of the Sarno Carnival is Alesio, a traditional Sarnese mask and one of the oldest in the Campania region, alongside more famous figures like Pulcinella and Fra Braciola. His face is painted in two colors: light blue, which evokes the infinite and life, and yellow, which refers to the underworld and death. In this dual nature, one can read the profound meaning of the popular carnival: the perennial challenge between what ends and what is reborn.
Historically, the celebrations concluded with the Death of Carnival: the puppet of Alesio was burned in the square after the reading of a burlesque will, a rite of passage that marked the end of the time of license and the entry into Lent. That practice is no longer performed: since the birth of the Sarno Carnival Association in 2005, an allegorical float has been dedicated to the mask every year, renewing its memory and making it the banner of the event.
The spectacular heart of the festival are the floats, created and customized by neighborhood associations and committees. Artisans work on them for months, starting from the sketches presented to the Municipality at the end of the year: papier-mâché, moving mechanisms, music, and dozens of costumed participants for each structure. The themes range from social satire to Risorgimento history, from cinema to pop culture.
Among the groups historically involved are the Uniti per Foce Association, the Alesio Association, I Chiacchieroni, I Soliti Ritardatari, the Acquarossa Committee, the Fuori Orario Association, the Serrazeta Fontanelle Committee, the Lavorate Unita Association, the Pirocca Committee, La Rinascita, Anima Danzante, and the Gioventù Sarnese Centro Storico. It is this network of volunteers that makes the Sarno Carnival a truly participatory event.
The calendar is not concentrated on a single day: the parades progressively touch Lavorate, Episcopio, Foce, and the urban centre, so that every district can experience the festival right at home. Piazza 5 Maggio is the meeting point for dance quadrille performances and the Children's Festival, while the Grand Final Parade on Shrove Tuesday starts from the Sports Field and crosses the town centre.
A separate chapter is the Agro Carnival, the day that opens Sarno to guest floats from Nocera Inferiore and San Marzano sul Sarno: a gesture of territorial networking that reminds us how much the carnival tradition belongs to the entire Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, a cultural border area between the Neapolitan and Salernitan territories.
Access to all events is free of charge, and the main days are broadcast live on the official social media channels of the event, so as to reach those who cannot be in the square.
Officially presented on January 24, 2026, in the council chamber of the Municipality of Sarno, the 2026 edition of the Sarno Carnival scheduled over a month of events, from February 1st to March 15th. Eight allegorical floats, created by associations and neighborhood committees, crossed the town centre and the districts of Lavorate, Episcopio, and Foce.
The highlight was the Grand Final Parade on Tuesday, February 17th, which started at 4:00 PM from the Sports Field: despite the rain, as the organizers recounted, the enthusiasm of families and visitors did not fade, and the streets of Sarno were filled with colors, music, and choreography. Mayor Francesco Squillante commented that seeing the streets full of colors and smiles represents the greatest satisfaction for the community.
Alongside the parades, the program included the Agro Carnival on February 8th with guest floats from Nocera Inferiore and San Marzano sul Sarno, the Children's Festival on February 15th in Piazza 5 Maggio with the Golden Mask award, and the Carnival in Music evening on February 16th at the Teatro De Lise. All events were broadcast live on official social media channels, with the days of February 8th and 17th also followed by Telenuova.
