About Sapori d'Autunno

In the small village of Opi, perched at 1,250 meters in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the Pro Loco Opi hosts the "Sapori d'Autunno" food and wine festival every autumn. Amidst the stone alleys of the historic center, visitors can taste traditional Marsican dishes—cecatelli with beans, roasted chestnuts, arrosticini, scamorza, and the local Opiana soup—accompanied by folk songs, live music, and bonfires lit in the square. A day combining foliage hikes, a rural market, and the genuine flavors of the Abruzzo mountains.

Sapori d'Autunno: the soul of the Abruzzo mountains in Opi

Every autumn, the village of Opi, in the province of L'Aquila, dons the warm colors of the season to host Sapori d'Autunno, the food and wine festival organized by Pro Loco Opi - APS. Perched at an altitude of 1,250 meters on a rocky spur at the foot of Mount Marsicano, Opi is one of Italy's most beautiful villages and a gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. In this setting, through the stone alleys of the historic center, the event transforms the village into a journey of taste and tradition.

The flavors of Marsican tradition

The heart of the festival lies in the traditional dishes served along the village streets. The undisputed queen is the roasted chestnut, the absolute protagonist of the Apennine autumn. Alongside it, you can enjoy cecatelli with beans—small local water-and-flour gnocchi—arrosticini, mountain scamorza, local bread, the characteristic Opiana soup, and Panonda, all paired with local water and wine. For those with specific dietary needs, a gluten-free stand is set up in collaboration with the AIC (Italian Celiac Association), where the same specialties can be tasted in a gluten-free version.

The day's program

The event offers a complete experience that accompanies the visitor from morning until night:

  • Morning: foliage hike along the trails and woods surrounding the village to admire the autumn colors of the Park;
  • Afternoon: rural market featuring local products and handicrafts;
  • Historic center: tasting of traditional dishes distributed throughout the village alleys;
  • Evening: live music and folk songs, while bonfires lit in the square warm up the evening, creating a charming and convivial atmosphere.

A village to discover

Awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, Opi preserves a well-kept medieval historic center, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Chamois of Abruzzo Museum. Nearby lie the Val Fondillo and the Macchiarvana plateau, pristine environments where one can observe the Park's wildlife. Sapori d'Autunno is the ideal opportunity to combine the discovery of one of Abruzzo's most authentic villages with the pleasure of its mountain cuisine, in an event that weaves together nature, gastronomy, and folk traditions.
