Celebrating mountain wild spinach in Villetta Barrea
The Orapi Festival is one of the most distinctive culinary events of the summer in Villetta Barrea, a small town in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, nestled on the shores of Lake Barrea in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Organized by the Pro Loco Villetta Barrea, the event is traditionally held on the last Saturday of July in the central Piazza F.lli Virgilio, transforming the village into a meeting place where flavors, music, and landscapes intertwine.
Orapi are wild mountain spinach that grow spontaneously on the high-altitude pastures of the Apennines, in areas once occupied by sheepfolds. They are hand-picked during the favorable season, a patient labor that has its roots in the pastoral culture of the upper Sangro Valley. Rich in flavor, orapi tell the story of an entire civilization tied to transhumance, the mountains, and the seasonality of their wild bounty.
The heart of the festival is the cuisine prepared according to recipes handed down by the village women. At the stalls set up in the square, you can taste specialties based on orapi, including:
The evening comes alive with Abruzzo folk music, which accompanies the tasting until late. The program also includes photo exhibitions dedicated to the territory and local traditions, as well as guided walks to discover wild herbs—an opportunity to get to know the flora of the Park's pastures up close. Around the communal tables, the oral tales of the village women, guardians of a memory that the festival renews every year, are woven together.
The festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover Villetta Barrea, its stone alleys, and its view of the lake. The town is an ideal starting point for excursions in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, among beech forests, trails, and wildlife sightings. The event is part of a rich summer calendar that makes this center of the Abruzzo mountains a perfect destination for a summer of nature, taste, and tradition.
The Orapi Festival in Villetta Barrea is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, in Piazza F.lli Virgilio. As per tradition, the Pro Loco will enliven the evening with orapi-based dishes—peasant soups, omelets, rustic stuffed focaccias, and handmade fresh pasta—accompanied by Abruzzo folk music. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and side events, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Villetta Barrea can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit) by following the signs for the Abruzzo National Park and the Sangro Valley; the nearest train station is Alfedena-Scontrone, on the Sulmona-Isernia line.
The festival is traditionally held on the last Saturday of July in Piazza F.lli Virgilio, in the center of Villetta Barrea, starting in the evening.
Admission to the event is free; dishes can be purchased directly at the food stalls at popular prices.
Given the altitude, a light jacket is recommended for the evening; during the festival days, it is advisable to book accommodation in the village or in the nearby towns of the Park well in advance. For information, you can contact the Municipality of Villetta Barrea.
