The patron saint festival of Villetta Barrea, on the shores of Lake Barrea
The Patronal Feast of Saint Vincent the Martyr and Saint Barbara is the most anticipated event of the year for Villetta Barrea, a village of just under six hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 990 meters in the province of L'Aquila, between the slopes of Monte Mattone and the waters of Lake Barrea, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The village's two patron saints are Saint Vincent the Martyr, whose relics are preserved in the parish church, and Saint Barbara: the community dedicates a distinct celebration to each during the summer.
The festivities in honor of Saint Vincent the Martyr are traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of July and are organized by the Patronal Feast Committee. The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession that accompanies the saint's statue through the streets of the historic center, preceded and followed by liturgical services in the parish. The secular program develops around this devotional core: illuminations lighting up the village alleys, brass band concerts, evening musical shows in the square, and moments of conviviality that draw back vacationers and former residents for the occasion.
Devotion to Saint Barbara, co-patron of the village, is celebrated in the second half of August with festivities in honor of St. Barbara, also managed by the Patronal Feast Committee. Both occurrences are part of a rich summer calendar that brings Villetta Barrea to life from July to September, including food festivals such as the Orapi Festival (dedicated to wild mountain spinach), theatrical performances, book presentations, dance evenings, and the Folk Festival at the end of August.
Villetta Barrea was founded in the 15th century when the inhabitants of Rocca Intramonti, following a fire, established a new settlement called Villa Valis Regiae. Linked for centuries to the transhumance economy, the village is now one of the gateways to the National Park and a popular destination for nature tourism. Those arriving for the patronal feast will find a compact historic center, a 14th-century castle with a circular tower, the Water Museum housed in an old mill, and lake views that frame the festival days.
Participating in the Patronal Feast of Saint Vincent the Martyr means immersing yourself in the most authentic side of inland Abruzzo: popular faith, the sounds of the band, the aroma of local dishes, and the warmth of a mountain community. One more reason to discover Villetta Barrea and the Sangro lakes area in the height of the summer season.
For 2026, the festivities in honor of Saint Vincent the Martyr in Villetta Barrea are expected on the weekend of the third Sunday of July, in accordance with local custom. As every year, the heart of the festival will be the solemn procession of the patron saint's statue through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by liturgical services, illuminations, and evening musical moments in the square organized by the Patronal Feast Committee. The complete secular program, including times, band performances, and shows, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Villetta Barrea (AQ) can be reached by car along the SS83 Marsicana road, which runs along Lake Barrea. The nearest train stations are Alfedena-Scontrone and Castel di Sangro, which are connected to the village by local bus lines. By car: take the A25 motorway exit Pescina/Cocullo or follow the SS17 towards Alto Sangro.
The festivities in honor of Saint Vincent the Martyr are held on the third Sunday of July; those for Saint Barbara in the second half of August.
Events are free and open to the public.
The village is at high altitude (990 m): layered clothing is recommended for the evenings. Book your accommodation in advance during the peak summer season.
