The festival celebrating high-altitude wild spinach in the village of Barrea
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Orapi Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic events of the summer in Barrea, a small medieval village in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the lake of the same name in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Organized by the Pro Loco, the event is traditionally held on August 13th in the scenic Piazza del Mammarino, attracting hundreds of visitors every year eager to discover a specialty as rare as it is tied to the land.
The orapo is a wild spinach that grows spontaneously on the high peaks of the Park in late spring, especially in areas once occupied by stazzi, the high-altitude sheep pastures. It is strictly hand-picked above 2,000 meters, a patient labor that has its roots in the pastoral culture of the Marsica region and the upper Sangro Valley. This mountain origin and the short harvesting season make the orapo a precious product, capable of telling the story of an entire landscape and a rural civilization.
The heart of the festival is the cuisine prepared according to ancient recipes passed down by the women of Barrea. At the stalls set up in the square, you can enjoy:
The evening comes alive with Abruzzo folk music and traditional dances that accompany the tasting until late. Around the communal tables, oral stories, rural memories, and the warm hospitality of the village intertwine: the festival is not just a gastronomic event, but a collective ritual that renews the bond between the community of Barrea and its mountains.
The festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover Barrea, with its stone alleys, castle, and lake views. The Municipality of Barrea and the Pro Loco include the event in a rich summer calendar, featuring nature hikes in the Park, concerts, and patronal feasts, making this small Abruzzo town an ideal destination for a summer of nature, taste, and tradition.
The Pro Loco of Barrea has not yet released the official program for the 2026 edition of the Orapi Festival. Based on tradition, the event is expected in mid-August in Piazza del Mammarino, featuring traditional orapi-based dishes — handmade gnocchetti, orapi and beans, grilled meats — and Abruzzo folk music. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Barrea and the Pro Loco announce the final dates and program.
Barrea can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit) by following the signs for the Abruzzo National Park and the Sangro Valley; the nearest train station is Alfedena-Scontrone, on the Sulmona-Isernia line.
The festival is traditionally held on August 13th in Piazza del Mammarino, in the historic center of Barrea, usually starting in the evening.
Admission to the event is free; dishes can be purchased directly at the food stalls at affordable prices.
Given the altitude (about 1,000 meters), a light jacket is recommended for the evening; during the festival days, it is advisable to book accommodation in the village or nearby park towns well in advance.
