The festival of Borgo Croci in Foggia, blending devotion, folklore, and local flavors

The Sant'Anna Festival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the city of Foggia, in Apulia, at the heart of the Province of Foggia and the Capitanata region. It is celebrated in Borgo Croci, the original nucleus from which the city was born: here, every year around July 26th, the locals pay homage to Saint Anne with a popular participation comparable in intensity to that of the main patronal feast.
According to tradition, Saint Anne—the mother of the Virgin Mary—is venerated as the protector of mothers-to-be. Over the centuries, a rich symbolism linked to fertility, the continuity of life, and gratitude for the harvest has layered around her figure. The devotion of the Borgo Croci residents thus intertwines with ancient rites, where the sacred and the popular coexist seamlessly.
The heart of the festival is the procession which, accompanied by a brass band, traverses the streets of Borgo Croci. The route, winding through the district's alleys, seems to trace the shape of a snail: a mollusk that becomes the ritual's totem, a symbol of the lunar cycle and sacred slowness. The Chiesa delle Croci, a historic monument of the neighborhood, serves as a backdrop for the musical and choreographic performances that enliven the evenings.
The Sant'Anna Festival is also a gastronomic ritual. Among the unmissable specialties are ciammaruchelle (small fried pizzas with tomato sauce), fried pizzas, snails cooked according to ancient recipes, and red melon, a symbol of fertility. There is no shortage of sweets, watermelons, and the traditional pettolata, among the stalls that fill the squares of the district.
More than just a religious recurrence, the Sant'Anna Festival is how Borgo Croci tells its own story and preserves its memory. It is an event where the community of Foggia gathers around its roots, celebrating faith, folklore, and the bonds between generations in one of the most authentic traditions of the Capitanata.
