The patronal feast of Stornara in the heart of the Tavoliere
Every year, in the heart of summer, Stornara celebrates its Patronal Feast in honor of San Rocco, venerated alongside Maria Santissima della Stella and San Francesco di Paola. A small town in the Tavoliere delle Puglie, in the province of Foggia, Stornara experiences its most important identity-defining event in mid-August, drawing back returning emigrants, pilgrims, and visitors from neighboring towns in the Capitanata area.
San Rocco, the pilgrim saint who healed the plague-stricken, is the protector of the Stornara community, and his liturgical feast day falls on August 16th. An ancient tradition is the arrival of the "compagnia": devotees who arrive on foot in the early morning hours to pay homage to the saint. Even today, many children are dressed in the characteristic pilgrim attire of San Rocco and follow the procession accompanied by a small dog, the animal that, according to tradition, brought a crust of bread to the saint every day while he was afflicted by the disease.
The most solemn moment is the procession, which winds through the main streets of the town between crowds of people and the sound of fireworks. The statue of the patron saint is carried on an imposing triumphal float decorated with lights and flowers, pulled by numerous devotees. The centuries-old Congrega di San Rocco, still active in Stornara, guards this tradition and organizes the religious rites together with the festival committee.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program. Artistic illuminations light up the streets of the center, particularly the main thoroughfare, while Piazza della Repubblica hosts shows and major evening concerts featuring Italian music artists. The evenings are inevitably closed by fireworks, a pyrotechnic display awaited by both young and old.
During the festival days, stalls and stands enliven the center of Stornara, offering traditional sweets, nougat, local products, and the genuine cuisine of the Tavoliere. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic agricultural village in Puglia, far from the most beaten tourist paths, and to experience a patronal feast that unites the entire community of the Municipality of Stornara.
The 2026 San Rocco Patronal Feast returns to enliven Stornara in mid-August, with the core of the celebrations on the patron saint's day, August 16th. The religious calendar includes holy masses, the blessing, and the solemn procession of the triumphal float adorned with lights and flowers through the town streets, accompanied by fireworks.
On the secular side, as every year, artistic illuminations, evening concerts in Piazza della Repubblica, and the final pyrotechnic show are expected. The complete musical program with the names of the guest artists will be announced by the festival committee closer to the event.
Stornara is located in the Tavoliere delle Puglie, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A16 motorway and the SS16/SS655, exiting towards Cerignola and Ortanova. The nearest train station is Cerignola-Ortanova on the Adriatic line, which is connected to the town center by bus services.
The festivities take place in mid-August, around August 16th, the liturgical day of San Rocco.
The procession, illuminations, concerts in the square, and fireworks are free and open to the public.
