In the heart of summer, the village of Ascoli Satriano, in the province of Foggia, celebrates its patron saint with the Patronal Feast of Saint Potitus Martyr. It is the most anticipated event of the year for this town in the Monti Dauni, the sub-Apennine region of northern Puglia: for three days in mid-August, the streets of the historic center fill with people, the town glows with artistic illuminations, and the community gathers around the figure of the martyr, who has been venerated here for centuries.

Between devotion and popular tradition

The festival is rooted in a long tradition of worship dedicated to Saint Potitus, a teenage martyr whose memory is deeply ingrained in the Daunian territory. The religious heart of the event is the solemn procession featuring the bust of the saint, which travels through the town streets accompanied by a brass band, amidst Eucharistic celebrations and moments of reflection. Devotion intertwines with unique local customs, such as the fireworks display and the traditional "ciuccio di San Potito" (the donkey of Saint Potitus), a donkey-shaped puppet loaded with fireworks that commemorates the legend surrounding the discovery of the saint's relics.

Every evening, Piazza Giovanni Paolo II hosts free concerts by Italian music artists, who over the years have brought well-known national names to Ascoli Satriano. At night, artistic illuminations transform the historic center into a scenic display of light, while fireworks bring the festivities to a close.
