Shrove Tuesday in Sanfront: polenta, Occitan dances, and the burning of the Ciciu
The Sanfront Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in Sanfront, a small town in the Province of Cuneo nestled at the entrance to the Po Valley, in Piedmont. Unlike many carnivals spread over several Sundays, the festivities here are concentrated entirely on Shrove Tuesday: a single, long day that brings Piazza Statuto, the town's beating heart, to life, attracting families, children in costume, and curious visitors from across the valley.
Sanfront lies in a territory with an ancient Occitan culture, and its Carnival is an authentic testament to this. In the afternoon, the square fills with traditional Occitan music and dance, performed by local historical groups such as Balerin del Bal Veij and Sensa Nom. This is a carnival that focuses not on massive floats, but on genuine community participation: the event is organized by the Pro Loco of Sanfront, with the support of the local municipality and the tireless work of volunteers.
The most delicious moment arrives in the late afternoon, around 4:00 PM, with the serving of polenta with sausage (sautisa) and stew, accompanied by a glass of red wine. The polentari group prepares this traditional peasant dish every year, turning it into an occasion for meeting and celebration for the whole town. For children, there is no shortage of inflatables, entertainment, and a dedicated snack.
The true symbol of the Sanfront Carnival is the burning of the Ciciu: at dusk, in Piazza Statuto, a large effigy is set on fire. According to tradition, the Ciciu is dedicated each year to an event or topic that sparked local debate throughout the year, presented with the ironic and irreverent spirit typical of the carnival season. The bonfire symbolically closes the carnival season and ushers in Lent.
Throughout the day, it is also possible to sign up for the Pro Loco with a small contribution, supporting the association that brings Sanfront to life with events and initiatives all year round.
The great Sanfront Carnival celebration was concentrated, as per tradition, into a single day: Shrove Tuesday. In Piazza Statuto, activities began shortly after 2:00 PM, with entertainment and inflatables for children and traditional Occitan dances.
