The patronal feast of Barge featuring tradition, music, and the famous White Dinner
The San Giovanni Battista Festival is the patronal feast of the Municipality of Barge, in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of Piedmont. Saint John the Baptist is the town's patron saint, to whom the Baroque parish church is dedicated; it houses an 11th-century Romanesque bell tower and belongs to the diocese of Saluzzo. Although Saint John is liturgically celebrated on June 24th, the popular festivities in Barge are concentrated at the end of July, when the village, located at the entrance to the Infernotto Valley at the foot of Monviso, comes alive for five days of events.
Throughout the festival, the historic center is transformed: the squares host fairs, markets, craft stalls, and local products, while the funfair is set up in Piazza San Rocco and Piazza Einaudi. The program includes traditional bocce tournaments, brass band concerts, ballroom dancing shows, and more youth-oriented activities like the "Barge'n Color Rush" with colored powders.
The most anticipated and signature moment of the festival is the White Dinner (Cena in Bianco), a collective meal where participants arrive dressed entirely in white and set up shared tables; in recent years, it has seen record-breaking attendance. The evening concludes with a fireworks display, one of the most spectacular moments of the festivities, followed by music from the brass bands.
The event is entirely managed by the Pro Loco of Barge, an association founded in 1976 that will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary of service to the territory in 2026. Between street food, karaoke, aperitifs, art exhibitions, the commercial fair, and the "Barge desbarassà" market, the San Giovanni Festival is much more than a religious commemoration: it is the major summer event that brings together the entire community of Barge and visitors from the Monviso valleys.
