About Sanciprianese Carnival

Every February, the Sanciprianese Carnival transforms San Cipriano Picentino, nestled at the foot of the Picentini Mountains in the province of Salerno, into a long procession of color. The allegorical floats, built in the preceding months by local groups, do not stay stationary in the square: they embark on a traveling tour between the main town and the hamlets of Filetta, Pezzano, Vignale, and Campigliano, even reaching the nearby municipality of Castiglione del Genovesi. It is a highly participatory community festival where music, masks, and solidarity go hand in hand.

A carnival that goes to the people

The Sanciprianese Carnival does not have a single stage. In San Cipriano Picentino, a town of just under seven thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, in Campania, the formula chosen for years is that of a traveling tour: the allegorical floats take to the streets and cross the main town and all the hamlets of the municipal territory over several days during the Carnival period. Those who cannot reach the main square find the parade right outside their door, and this is exactly the essence of the event.

The result is a carnival profoundly different from the large national showcases. No grandstands or entrance tickets along the route: you head out into the street, join the queue behind the float, and dance in the squares and parking lots of the hamlets. The festival belongs to those who build it.

The allegorical floats and local groups

The heart of the event is the allegorical floats, created during the winter by informal groups of young people, families, and local associations. The themes draw heavily from popular imagination and cartoons: recent editions have featured floats dedicated to Super Mario Kart, The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Sonic, and superheroes. Around each float, a masked group accompanies the parade with music and choreography.

  • Handcrafted construction of the floats in the months leading up to February
  • Masked groups parading on foot behind each float
  • Successive stops in the main town and the hamlets of Filetta, Pezzano, Vignale, and Campigliano
  • Evening festivities with music, shows, and refreshments

The spirit of solidarity: the UNIVES group

An important part of the event revolves around the UNIVES group, an informal local collective that has been building its own float for years and pairs the Carnival with charitable and social initiatives. The group parades in memory of their friend Vincenzo Esposito and invites anyone who wishes to join the procession on all scheduled days: a simple gesture that has given the Sanciprianese Carnival a recognizable character, closer to a community feast than a tourist parade.

Beyond municipal borders

For several editions, the Carnival has crossed the borders of San Cipriano Picentino. The neighboring municipality of Castiglione del Genovesi participates with its own float and hosts one of the tour stops, usually the first. It is a natural extension, as the two towns share the same hill and the same rural history behind Salerno.

San Cipriano Picentino, between Salerno and the Picentini Mountains

San Cipriano Picentino stands at about 365 meters above sea level, on the eastern slopes of Monte Monna, about fifteen kilometers from Salerno. According to tradition, the town was born after the Roman destruction of ancient Picentia and took its name from the martyr Saint Cyprian; the adjective "Picentino" was officially added in 1862. Today, the area is known primarily for its chestnuts, hazelnuts, and wine, celebrated in other Pro Loco events such as the Chestnut Festival and the Festival of Festivals of the Picentini.

The Carnival fits into this calendar as the event that kicks off the year of festivities: it arrives when the hills are still bare and brings noise and color to the streets of the hamlets.

Tips for visitors

Those visiting the area for the first time should consider the Sanciprianese Carnival as a local experience rather than a large spectacular event: the value lies in the hospitality, the proximity to those parading, and the chance to see up close how an allegorical float is born. The parades take place outdoors, often on sloping roads: comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the February cold are highly recommended.

Sanciprianese Carnival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Sanciprianese Carnival featured five allegorical floats with different themes, which embarked on a traveling tour between San Cipriano Picentino and its hamlets. The first stop took place on Sunday, February 8, 2026, in the morning in Castiglione del Genovesi, a neighboring municipality that participated in this edition with its own float. The UNIVES group presented a float dedicated to Lupin, parading in memory of their friend Vincenzo Esposito and inviting the entire Picentini community to join the procession.

Five floats for a single territory

The 2026 Sanciprianese Carnival opened on Sunday, February 8, in the morning, with a stop outside the municipal borders: in Castiglione del Genovesi, a neighboring municipality that participated in this edition with its own float. From there, the tour continued along the streets of the main town and the hamlets of San Cipriano Picentino, in the province of Salerno.

Five allegorical floats with different themes moved through the streets, each accompanied by its own masked group. Among them was the float of the UNIVES group, dedicated to the character Lupin: a choice that confirmed the "pop" vocation of the event, where the subjects of the floats come from comics, cartoons, and popular culture.

In memory of Vincenzo Esposito

As in previous editions, the UNIVES group paraded in memory of their friend Vincenzo Esposito, extending an open invitation to anyone who wished to walk alongside the float during all the days scheduled in the Carnival calendar. The participation of the entire Picentini community was the common thread of the edition.

The evening events

Alongside the daytime parades, the Pro Loco calendar included a Carnival Party on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 9:00 PM at the Youth Hostel in San Cipriano Picentino. The program for the following days focused on the weekend and Shrove Tuesday, the traditional conclusion of the Carnival period.

Parking and routes

During the parades, some streets in the main town and hamlets are closed to traffic: it is advisable to leave your car in the designated parking areas and continue on foot. The route is partially uphill.

Tickets and information

The street parades take place outdoors throughout the municipal area. For the updated program, stop times, and any access conditions for indoor evening events, it is best to contact the Pro Loco San Cipriano Picentino directly ([email protected], +39 340 6956248) or follow their social media pages.

Where to stay and eat
