A living nativity scene in the Conca Sant'Angelo, nestled within the sinkholes of Salento
In the small town of Sanarica, in the province of Lecce and in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia, the Living Nativity stands as one of the most evocative and historic Christmas traditions in the region. The performance takes place in the Conca Sant'Angelo, a karst sinkhole formed by the dissolution of limestone rock: a natural white-stone chasm, complete with a small waterfall and surrounded by ancient olive trees, which becomes the perfect setting to recreate the Bethlehem of the Nativity. Thanks to this unique environment, the Sanarica event is considered the first living nativity scene ever set up in Puglia.
Along the path, dozens of performers in period costumes bring to life workshops and settings faithful to the rural traditions of Salento. Visitors encounter ancient crafts of the past, scenes of daily life, and the tools and gestures of a vanished rural civilization, all leading up to the Nativity hut. The scent of burning wood, the soft lighting, and the natural landscape turn the visit into a true journey through time, curated by the town's volunteers, artisans, and actors.
The visit to the nativity scene is accompanied by tastings of typical Salento products, including traditional pittule and puccette prepared according to local recipes. The food, the warmth of the braziers, and traditional sounds complete the intimate and convivial atmosphere that has always characterized the event.
Organized by the Associazione Amici del Presepe Vivente di Sanarica, the event attracts thousands of visitors every year: recent editions have recorded around 18,000 attendees, including families, tourists, and nativity enthusiasts from all over Salento and beyond. In 2025, the festival reached its 35th edition, confirming its status as one of the most important and well-known living nativity scenes in the region.
Sanarica is a village of just over 1,400 inhabitants nestled among the sinkholes and plateaus of lower Salento, a few kilometers from Lecce, Otranto, and the Adriatic coast. The territory, dotted with ancient olive trees and karst phenomena like the Conca Sant'Angelo, offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic corner of Puglia, far from the most crowded circuits, combining the magic of Christmas with the rediscovery of nature and local traditions.
The 35th edition of the Sanarica Living Nativity was held in the scenic Conca Sant'Angelo, in the town of Sanarica (Lecce), on the evenings of December 25, 26, and 28, 2025, and January 1, 4, and 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Along the path, performers in period costumes brought to life scenes of the Nativity, ancient crafts, and rural Salento life, amidst the scent of wood, soft lighting, and tastings of typical products like pittule and puccette. The event, organized by the Associazione Amici del Presepe Vivente di Sanarica, confirmed its role as a landmark Christmas event in Salento.

The living nativity is set up in the Conca Sant'Angelo, along the provincial road connecting Sanarica to Botrugno, in the province of Lecce. By car, you can reach Sanarica from the SS 275 (exit Poggiardo/Maglie) and continue towards the town center; the area is signposted during opening evenings. The nearest airports are Brindisi and Bari.
Performances are generally held in the late afternoon and early evening, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission is free. We recommend warm clothing and comfortable shoes, suitable for an outdoor path on natural terrain.
For updated dates and programs, it is best to follow the social media channels of the Associazione Amici del Presepe Vivente di Sanarica. On the busiest evenings, queues at the entrance to the path are possible.
