The grand celebration of Torremaggiore's patron saint, blending faith, illuminations, and the historic San Sabino Fair
The San Sabino Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year in Torremaggiore, a town in the Alto Tavoliere in the province of Foggia, in the heart of northern Puglia. Every year in June, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that combines religious devotion with the popular, civic, and spectacular dimensions of a town festival.
The bond between Torremaggiore and San Sabino has roots in the Middle Ages: the feast originates from a papal bull by Honorius III in 1216, which made the saint the protector of the city. Since then, the veneration of the San Sabino statue has accompanied the life of the municipality, passed down from generation to generation to become part of the collective identity of the territory.
The San Sabino Patronal Feast has been recognized as an Intangible Heritage of the Puglia Region, a distinction that certifies its cultural, historical, and anthropological value. It is not merely a religious event, but a manifestation that preserves rites, knowledge, and popular traditions deeply rooted in the Torremaggiore community and the entire Tavoliere delle Puglie.
The heart of the festival is represented by the solemn processions of the venerated San Sabino statue, which travels through the city streets in an atmosphere of intense popular and spiritual participation. Surrounding the religious moments is a rich civic program: spectacular artistic illuminations that light up the center, traditional pyrotechnic batteries, band and symphonic concerts, musical evenings with nationally renowned guests, and folkloric appointments designed for all ages.
Alongside the religious feast is the San Sabino Fair, one of the oldest and most deeply felt commercial events in the Foggia area, established in 1834. The fair enlivens the city streets and spaces—from the Municipal Pine Forest to Via Sacco e Vanzetti and Corso Giacomo Matteotti—with stalls and stands dedicated to crafts, agriculture, antiques, and the territory's agri-food excellence, attracting visitors from across the Tavoliere and the Capitanata region.
Faith, tradition, gastronomy, and music merge into four days that involve the entire city. The San Sabino Patronal Feast is the ideal opportunity to discover Torremaggiore, its historic center, the De Sangro Ducal Castle, and the authentic hospitality of a community that finds its roots in its patron saint every year.
From June 12 to 15, 2026, Torremaggiore celebrated its patron saint in a particularly significant edition, the first since the festival was recognized as Intangible Heritage of the Puglia Region.
Saturday, June 13, marked the start of the 193rd edition of the San Sabino Fair, which enlivened the Municipal Pine Forest, Via Sacco e Vanzetti, and Corso Giacomo Matteotti, while the first solemn procession of the statue traversed the city center. The evening offered music and entertainment in Piazza De Sangro.
Sunday, June 14, after the second procession, the program continued with the symphonic concert dedicated to Paolo Falcicchio, the Rino Gaetano tribute in Piazza Incoronazione, and the traditional "San Severo-style" pyrotechnic battery.
Monday, June 15, saw the grand finale with a concert by Rocco Hunt in Piazzale Palma e Piacquaddio and the spectacular "Scapp e Fuij" pyrotechnic display, now in its 14th edition.
Torremaggiore is located in the Alto Tavoliere, in the province of Foggia. By car: A14 motorway, San Severo exit, then SS16 towards Torremaggiore. By train: San Severo station on the Bologna-Bari-Lecce line, connected to Torremaggiore by local buses. By plane: Bari-Palese airport, about two hours away.
The patronal feast events and concerts take place in public spaces in the center with free admission. The detailed program is released every year by the Patronal Feast Committee, the Parish, and the Municipality of Torremaggiore. It is recommended to arrive in the city early on the evenings of the main concerts and processions.
