The patronal festival of Bene Vagienna, blending faith, a funfair, and street food
San Gottardo of Hildesheim is the patron saint of Bene Vagienna, a town in the province of Cuneo in the heart of Piedmont. A bishop who lived between the 10th and 11th centuries and is closely linked to the Alpine region—the famous St. Gotthard Pass is named after him—he is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. On this occasion, the Municipality of Bene Vagienna, together with the Pro Loco and local associations, organizes a long series of initiatives spread between May and June, with the heart of the festivities concentrated on the patronal weekend.
Throughout the festival, the historic center of Bene Vagienna is transformed: from Friday to Sunday, the traditional funfair arrives, with rides enlivening the squares, while street food stalls offer specialties to enjoy while strolling through the village streets. It is the most anticipated moment for families and young people, when the town fills with lights, music, and aromas.
Alongside the festive atmosphere, the religious significance of the occasion remains central. On Sunday, Holy Mass is celebrated in the church dedicated to San Gottardo on Viale Rimembranza. Among the most characteristic traditions is the blessing of vintage cars and motorcycles participating in the rally organized on the day of the festival: after the celebration, the registered historic vehicles are displayed in the center of Bene, attracting enthusiasts and curious onlookers. The church of San Rocco also hosts the traditional charity stall, open for several days to support parish activities.
The Bene Vagienna Musical Band deserves a special mention as a key protagonist of the patronal celebrations. For San Gottardo, the band performs its concert, often with the participation of the junior band, in the churches of the center: a deeply felt event that has accompanied the patronal festival for decades and underscores its strong roots in the community.
The San Gottardo Patronal Festival is an authentic example of Piedmontese patronal feasts: not a large tourist event, but a celebration of identity where an entire community gathers around its saint, its traditions, and its town square. For those visiting Bene Vagienna and the province of Cuneo during this period, it is the ideal opportunity to discover the most genuine and popular side of the Roman town of Augusta Bagiennorum.
