The abstract paintings of Andrés Avré in dialogue with the medieval tower of Barbaresco
The Barbaresco Tower, in the small town of Barbaresco in the province of Cuneo (Piedmont), hosts the solo exhibition Ancient and Contemporary, dedicated to the Turin-based painter Andrés Avré. The exhibition takes place inside the famous siege tower that rises above the hills of Barbaresco, a landscape heritage site recognized by UNESCO alongside the vineyards of the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato.
Born in Turin in 1966 and raised in the surrounding province, Andrés Avré is a painter who blends his personal experience with the Piedmontese hilly landscape. His work is an abstract and textural exploration: color is applied with precision, measured in the variations of earth tones, ranging from dark reds to ochre and burnt browns. The surfaces, built on multiple levels through the interaction of intention and chance, evoke processes of sedimentation, erosion, and transformation.
In this exhibition, the works establish an intense and silent dialogue with the substance of time: color becomes living matter that confronts the roughness of the medieval walls. Deep reds, oranges, and incandescent earth tones light up the tower's spaces, creating a path where contemporary art resonates with ancient architecture.
A visit to the exhibition is combined with the experience of the tower itself, which stands about thirty meters high and offers a 360-degree view of the Barbaresco hills and the vineyards that have made this corner of Piedmont famous. Inside the structure, you will also find a bistro and a space dedicated to guided tastings of local wines.
The Barbaresco Tower has been a landmark for contemporary art in the Langhe for years, with a busy calendar of temporary exhibitions. Ancient and Contemporary fits into this program, offering visitors not only a pictorial experience but also a different way to experience the village of Barbaresco and its iconic landscape, amidst medieval history, great wine, and art.
The Ancient and Contemporary exhibition by Andrés Avré is hosted inside the Barbaresco Tower throughout 2026. The artist's canvases and works, built through layers of color, establish an intense and silent dialogue with the ancient stone of the siege tower.
Color is the true protagonist: deep chromatic fields, reds, oranges, and incandescent earth tones that evoke sedimentation, erosion, and transformation, resonating with the roughness of the medieval walls.
The visit to the exhibition is included in the tower admission, open every day from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and is accompanied by the panorama over the Barbaresco hills.
