The first spring fair of the Capo di Leuca, in Salignano
The San Giuseppe Fair takes place every year in Salignano, a small hamlet in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo, in the heart of Lower Salento in the province of Lecce, just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca. It is one of the oldest and most cherished fairs in the southernmost tip of Puglia: the first celebrations in honor of Saint Joseph in the Salignano area date back to 1682, initiated by Francesco Lacca of Salignano, and have since been accompanied by a market that, over the centuries, has become an unmissable event for the entire region.
It is no coincidence that the San Giuseppe Fair is known as the "first spring fair": falling on March 19th, the day of the saint's liturgical feast, it symbolically marks the beginning of the beautiful season. At dawn on March 19th, Via San Giuseppe and the streets of the hamlet fill with stalls: in the past, everything was sold there — agricultural tools, all kinds of fruits and vegetables, household goods, antiques — and even today, the fair retains its popular character, with local products, crafts, sweets, and items for the home and countryside.
The religious heart of the festival is the 17th-century Church of San Giuseppe, built between 1617 and 1630 halfway between Salignano and Leuca. Once equipped with a small hospice, the church was for centuries a place of rest and refreshment for the many pilgrims heading to the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca. The fair was born and grew around this place of worship, in an inseparable intertwining of popular faith and the commercial life of the community.
A tasty Salento legend is linked to the origin of the festival. It is said that during a San Giuseppe procession, surprised by a thunderstorm, the inhabitants of Castrignano del Capo abandoned the statue of the saint to run into the fields to collect snails (the cuzziddhi) that had emerged after the rain. The inhabitants of Salignano, indignant, mockingly nicknamed them "the cuzziddhi" and took the statue to their own territory, assuming from then on the honor and burden of organizing the festival and the fair.
The festival is traditionally divided into two days: the eve of March 18th, with the procession and liturgical celebrations, and March 19th, the day of the fair itself. Religious services are accompanied by brass band concerts, traditional Salento folk music, and entertainment in Piazza Umberto I, which enliven the hamlet until the evening and make the San Giuseppe Fair one of the most anticipated occasions for the communities of Salignano, Castrignano del Capo, and the entire Capo di Leuca.
In 2026, the San Giuseppe Fair once again renewed a ritual in Salignano, a hamlet of Castrignano del Capo, that has been repeating for over three centuries. On March 18th, the community gathered for the procession and masses at the Church of San Giuseppe, accompanied by the band; on March 19th, the saint's liturgical day, the hamlet hosted the historic fair from dawn along Via San Giuseppe, with stalls featuring local products, agricultural items, handicrafts, and antiques. Religious celebrations and musical moments in Piazza Umberto I completed a two-day event that, every year, attracts visitors from all over the Capo di Leuca.
March 18th (eve): procession through the streets of the hamlet and liturgical celebrations in the Church of San Giuseppe; brass band concert and Salento folk music in Piazza Umberto I.
March 19th (Feast of San Giuseppe): opening of the fair from the early morning hours along Via San Giuseppe; holy masses in the church; in the afternoon, procession with the statue of the saint towards the Mother Church; evening musical entertainment in the square.
The fair is held in Salignano, a hamlet of Castrignano del Capo (LE), along Via San Giuseppe and near the 17th-century church of the same name, between the town center and the road to Santa Maria di Leuca. Civil and musical events are concentrated in Piazza Umberto I.
By car: the hamlet can be reached via the SS275 towards Leuca, taking the exit for Castrignano del Capo–Salignano. By train: the reference station is Gagliano del Capo (Sud-Est Lecce–Gagliano line), from where you can continue by local bus or taxi. The nearest airport is Brindisi–Casale.
The fair takes place around March 19th, the feast of Saint Joseph. Admission to the fair and celebrations is free; the market is active all day starting from the early morning hours.
