The patronal feast of Alessano featuring faith, illuminations, and the historic Fera Nova
In the heart of Lower Salento, the town of Alessano (province of Lecce, Puglia) honors its patron, the martyr Saint Tryphon, with one of the most popular celebrations of the Salento summer. The festival is traditionally held on the last Sunday of July and the following Monday, blending religious devotion with secular festivities. For three days, the village glows with lights, music, and tradition, drawing worshippers and visitors from across the Salento peninsula.
According to tradition, Saint Tryphon was born in Lampsacus, Asia Minor, around 232 AD. A humble gooseherd, he became known for his healing powers and was martyred in Nicaea during the persecutions of Emperor Decius while still a youth. In Alessano, he is venerated as the protector of fields and harvests: popular memory attributes to him a miraculous intervention against locust invasions that threatened local crops in 1545 and 1647. The statue of the saint depicts him as a young man with blond hair, eyes turned toward heaven, and two geese at his feet, a nod to his past as a shepherd.
The most solemn moment is the procession of the statue of Saint Tryphon, which winds through the historic center of Alessano amidst the faithful. The day is marked by liturgical rites—preceded by a three-day preparation—and a solemn mass. The town's streets and squares are adorned with traditional Apulian illuminations, intricate light frames that create arches and scenic designs over the main thoroughfares.
The secular side of the festival begins in the morning with symphonic band concerts. The afternoon is dedicated to children with street performers and entertainment, while the evening sees local Salento folk music groups performing in the main square. The grand finale features a spectacular fireworks display, lighting up the village rooftops to close the celebrations.
On the Monday following the festival Sunday, the Fera Nova takes place—an ancient market fair known by this name in the local dialect. Stalls crowd the market square and the town center, offering local delicacies, traditional sweets, crafts, and various goods. This event is deeply rooted in the rural traditions of Salento and remains one of the defining features of the Alessano patronal feast.
The summer festival falls on the last Sunday of July and the following Monday (with the Fera Nova). There is also a winter version of the commemoration on November 10th, celebrated without the fair. For those visiting the Capo di Leuca in mid-summer, the Saint Tryphon Festival is a perfect opportunity to discover Alessano, a stone-built village between Leuca and the lower Salento, in the midst of its most authentic identity.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Tryphon Festival will be held in Alessano (LE) from July 25 to 27, following the custom of holding the festivities on the last Sunday of July and the following Monday. Sunday, July 26, will feature the religious heart of the festival, with a solemn mass and the procession of the saint's statue through the historic center; Monday, July 27, sees the return of the Fera Nova, the ancient market fair that enlivens the town streets. The detailed program—including times, band concerts, square performances, and fireworks—will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Based on tradition, the festival includes: symphonic band concerts in the morning, the triduum and solemn mass, the procession of the Saint Tryphon statue through the historic center, entertainment and street performers for children in the afternoon, local Salento folk music groups in the square in the evening, and a final fireworks display. Monday is dedicated to the Fera Nova with stalls in the town center.
