The summer feast of Letojanni's patron saint, featuring a stunning boat procession along the Ionian coast

In Letojanni, a lively seaside town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, Saint Joseph is not only celebrated on March 19th, the liturgical feast day. Every year on the first Sunday of August, the community renews the San Giuseppe Sea Feast: a celebration that takes on a more choreographic and folkloric character than the spring event, as the highlight takes place not on the town streets, but on the water, along the Ionian coast.
The heart of the feast is the sea procession. Following the Eucharistic celebration on the beach, the statue of Saint Joseph is loaded onto a boat and taken offshore, accompanied by a procession of local fishing boats and private vessels. The ritual recalls the day when, according to tradition, the statue of the saint arrived in Letojanni from the sea: this is why the bond between the patron saint and the seafaring people is so deeply felt in this village overlooking the Ionian Sea.
The sea procession had been suspended for about twenty years and returned to the festivities after a long hiatus, bringing an entire community back to the squares and the promenade. The event is promoted by the San Giuseppe parish community together with the Letojanni municipal administration, with the support of local law enforcement, the Pro Loco, the Misericordia, the Fratres, and local sports associations.
The summer feast is not limited to the day of the procession: in the days leading up to it, the calendar is enriched with religious events, social gatherings, traditional games, sports tournaments, and musical evenings, historically including the LetoFestival singing competition. It is a week that weaves together devotion, maritime tradition, and village life, ideal for those visiting the Riviera between Taormina and Messina in the heart of summer.
The focal point of the festivities is the Church of San Giuseppe and the Letojanni promenade, with the beach mass at Piazza Angelo D'Arrigo and the civil events animating the town squares. From there, the boat carrying the statue sets sail under the gaze of residents and tourists.
The 2026 edition of the San Giuseppe Sea Feast in Letojanni does not yet have an official program published. Based on tradition, the event is held on the first Sunday of August and spans several days of religious and civil celebrations, with the highlight being the sea procession of the patron saint's statue. The detailed program, including times and events, is usually released by the Parish of San Giuseppe and the Municipality of Letojanni in the weeks preceding the feast.
Letojanni is located on the Ionian coast of Messina, between Taormina and Messina. By train, it is served by the Letojanni station on the Messina–Catania line. By car, it can be reached via the A18 Messina–Catania motorway, taking the Taormina exit and continuing along the SS114. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The Sea Feast is held on the first Sunday of August, with events in the preceding days. The liturgical patronal feast is celebrated on March 19th.
Access to the celebrations and the procession is free.
