The patronal feast of Gaggi, blending faith, the traditional vara procession, and fireworks in the Alcantara Valley.

In the heart of the Alcantara Valley, at the foot of Mount Etna and just a few kilometers from Taormina, the town of Gaggi (province of Messina) celebrates its patron saint, Saint Sebastian, every year. The feast traditionally falls on the second Sunday of August and stands as the primary religious and cultural event for the village, known as the "Gateway to the Alcantara."
The cult of Saint Sebastian in Gaggi dates back to the 16th century. Like other Sicilian towns such as Mistretta and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Gaggi chose Saint Sebastian as its patron in the years following the terrible plague epidemic of 1575โ1578 as an act of thanksgiving for their survival. The Church of Saint Sebastian, built in 1576, stands as a testament to the antiquity of this devotion, alongside the 16th-century Mother Church (Maria SS. Annunziata).
The heart of the celebration is the evening procession of the vara. Following the solemn Mass in honor of the Patron, during which the faithful pay homage to the Saint with flowers and hymns, the community gathers in the streets beneath the illuminations to follow the statue of Saint Sebastian. The 'varetta,' which houses the Saint's relics, is carried on the shoulders of devotees dressed in traditional white tunics, black trousers, and a red cord tied at the waist. The procession winds through the main streets of the village, pausing for the blessing of the faithful before returning to the church.
For the occasion, the entire village is dressed in its finest: the streets along the procession route are filled with colorful arches, lights, flowers, and flags hanging from balconies. At night, after bidding farewell to the Patron Saint with music and song, the festivities conclude with a spectacular fireworks display that illuminates the sky over the Alcantara Valley.
Participating in the Saint Sebastian feast is a wonderful way to discover an authentic corner of the province of Messina, far from the major tourist crowds yet easily accessible from Catania and Taormina. The patronal feast unites faith, popular traditions, and conviviality, offering a glimpse of a community that keeps its roots alive.
The Municipality of Gaggi and the Maria SS. Annunziata Parish have not yet published the official calendar for the 2026 edition of the Saint Sebastian patronal feast. In line with tradition, the event is expected to take place on the second Sunday of August.
As every year, the program is expected to revolve around religious rites (triduums, solemn Mass in honor of the Patron) and the highlight of the procession of the vara with the statue of the Saint, carried on the shoulders of devotees through the decorated streets of the historic center, concluding with the fireworks display. The detailed program will be published as soon as it becomes available.
