The patronal feast of Mongiuffi, blending Carmelite faith and tradition

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is one of the most cherished traditions in Mongiuffi Melia, a small town in the province of Messina nestled in a valley rich in plane trees, vineyards, and ancient olive groves, in the heart of the Ionian Sicily just behind Taormina. The celebration takes place around the parish church of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo, located in the village of Mongiuffi in Piazza del Carmine, which held the status of a sanctuary until 1948 before becoming a parish.
The heart of the festival is July 16th, the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The community prepares with a novena, during which the rosary is recited and traditional expressions of filial devotion to the Madonna are renewed. On the day of the feast, a solemn pontifical mass is celebrated, and the investiture of the new sisters of the Third Order of Carmel takes place, during which the priest imposes the scapular and the white and brown cincture, signs of the ancient Carmelite spirituality that tradition traces back to the gift of Saint Simon Stock.
At nightfall, the statue of the Virgin is carried in procession through the village streets on the precious 18th-century float, accompanied by the faithful, as well as civil, military, and religious authorities. The concluding rites, held at the end of July, feature a celebration on the church parvis, a procession of the statue around the square, and the act of entrustment of the parish to Our Lady of Mount Carmel: a moment of great intensity that seals the centuries-old bond between the community and its patron saint.
Mongiuffi Melia consists of two small, characteristic centers, Mongiuffi and Melia, joined by a bridge spanning the Ghiรฒdaro stream. The town's history is closely linked to that of Taormina and the Barrile and Corvaja families, but its origins are much older, as evidenced by the remains of a Greco-Roman aqueduct. Marian devotion is deeply rooted in the area: in addition to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the local religious calendar includes numerous festivals, from the Madonna della Catena to Saint Sebastian and Saint Leonard.
The 2026 edition of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Mongiuffi Melia will feature the usual sequence of rites: the novena of preparation, the solemn pontifical mass on the feast day, the evening procession with the 18th-century float, and the concluding rites at the end of the month with the act of entrustment of the parish. The precise dates and detailed program for 2026 have not yet been published: the calendar will be updated as soon as the parish communicates the official times.
Mongiuffi Melia can be reached by car from the SS114 Ionian road by exiting at Letojanni or Taormina and driving up the Ghiรฒdaro valley. The nearest train station is Taormina-Giardini, from where you can continue by bus or car.
Festival on July 16th, with a novena in the preceding days and concluding rites at the end of July. Access to all celebrations is free.
