The patronal feast of Giardini-Naxos, blending sea, faith, and fishermen's traditions
In the town of Giardini-Naxos, in the province of Messina, the Madonna Raccomandata Festival is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community reconnects with its history as a seaside village. The devotion is rooted in the fishermen of the Saja district, the original core of the town, who would "entrust" themselves to the Virgin before facing the uncertainties of the sea, asking her to watch over their return. This is the origin of the title Madonna Raccomandata, now the heavenly patron of Giardini-Naxos and venerated as the Queen of Peace.
The statue venerated in the town, a work by sculptor Felice Bottiglieri, arrived in Giardini in 1853, transported by sea from Naples on a boat belonging to the Cacopardo brothers and landed right on the shore of the Saja. Since then, the statue has been kept in the Mother Church of Santa Maria Raccomandata, on Corso Umberto I, and serves as the focal point around which the festival days revolve.
The festivities span the summer, but reach their peak in the first days of September with three highly symbolic moments:
As this is a fishermen's festival, the bond with the sea remains central: traditional rites include the blessing of the boats and the sea at the port, commemorating the landing of 1853. The main day concludes late in the evening with a brass band concert and a fireworks display over the Saja sea, while stalls and markets enliven the streets of the center. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Giardini-Naxos, a pearl of the Ionian Riviera of Messina at the foot of Taormina, in its most authentic and popular form.
For 2026, the Santa Maria Raccomandata Parish confirms the celebration of the patronal feast of Giardini-Naxos, with the peak expected on September 7th, 8th, and 9th. The highlight remains September 8th, with the procession of the statue through the town streets.
The structure of the festivities follows tradition: A Scinnuta (the descent of the statue), the solemn procession, and the Acchianata (the return to the church), in addition to the blessing of the boats and fireworks over the Saja sea.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with times and day-by-day appointments, will be published by the parish in the weeks leading up to the festival.

Giardini-Naxos is located on the Ionian coast of the province of Messina, at the foot of Taormina. By train: Taormina-Giardini station on the Messina-Catania line, just a few minutes from the center. By car: take the Giardini-Naxos exit on the A18 Messina-Catania motorway. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (about 60 km) and Reggio Calabria.
The heart of the festival is the Mother Church of Santa Maria Raccomandata, on Corso Umberto I, and the streets of the town center crossed by the procession. The main events are concentrated from September 7th to 9th, with the solemn procession on September 8th.
The event is free and takes place outdoors. In September, Giardini-Naxos is very busy: it is advisable to book accommodation in advance and reach the center on foot, given the crowds during the procession.
