The patronal feast of Savoca featuring a procession, a sacred re-enactment of the martyrdom, and the ancient 'u diavulazzu' ritual
The Saint Lucy Festival is the main celebration in Savoca, a charming medieval village perched on the hills of the Messina province in Sicily, world-renowned as one of the iconic filming locations for The Godfather. Every year, on the second Sunday of August, the municipality of Savoca gathers around its patron saint with a festival that weaves together religious devotion, historical memory, and one of the island's most original folkloric performances.
The heart of the festival is the living sacred re-enactment of Saint Lucy's martyrdom, staged in the alleys and squares of the historic center with period costumes. A local young woman plays 'la Lucia': dressed in white, she remains motionless on a man's shoulders for the duration of the scene, symbolizing the unwavering firmness of her faith. Around her, Roman soldiers (the so-called 'giudei') move, attempting in vain to drag her by yoking her to oxen.
The most feared and anticipated character is 'u diavulazzu', the devil: dressed in red, wearing an antique wooden mask and carrying a small pitchfork, he runs through the crowd trying to tempt the Saint. The flight of the oxen through the narrow streets of the village, of clear Spanish origin and almost tauromachian in nature, is the most adrenaline-filled and spectacular moment, symbolically representing the victory of good over evil.
At nightfall, following the re-enactment and the solemn liturgical celebration, the procession of the precious silver statue of the Saint begins. Crafted in 1666, it is kept in the Church of San Nicolรฒ (also known as the Church of Saint Lucy). The fercolo travels through the streets of the ancient village accompanied by the brass band, confraternity members, devotees, and local authorities, in an atmosphere of intense popular participation.
Devotion to Saint Lucy in Savoca dates back to the 15th century: in 1465, the Dominican Friars' convent dedicated to her was built. The festival is organized by the Confraternity of Saint Lucy, founded around 1600 and led by a temporary Governor, which has preserved and passed down the rites and traditions linked to the patron saint for centuries.
In addition to the summer festival, Savoca honors Saint Lucy on December 13th, the liturgical feast of the Syracusan martyr, with a more intimate and devotional celebration that includes a novena, the distribution of traditional bread rolls to the faithful, and a suggestive candlelight procession through the village streets.
The 2026 Saint Lucy Festival in Savoca is confirmed for Sunday, August 9, 2026, in keeping with the tradition that sets the patronal feast on the second Sunday of August. Festivities will begin on the preceding Saturday.
Once again this year, the highlight of the day will revolve around the sacred re-enactment of the martyrdom with 'la Lucia', the Roman soldiers, the oxen, and the unsettling 'u diavulazzu', culminating in the procession of the silver statue accompanied by the brass band through the alleys of the medieval village.
The detailed schedule for the 2026 edition, including liturgical celebrations, fireworks, and side events, will be announced by the Confraternity of Saint Lucy closer to the event.
