The oldest patronal feast in Santa Teresa di Riva, blending faith, processions, and fireworks.
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is the oldest and most defining religious tradition of Santa Teresa di Riva, a coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, overlooking the Ionian Sea. Our Lady of Mount Carmel was proclaimed patron saint of the city in 1888, the year the precious statue still venerated by the faithful was created. Since then, every July 16th, the municipality gathers around its protector in a celebration that weaves together faith, collective memory, and popular folklore.
The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel, located in the Bucalo district, next to the historic Saracen Tower. The current building, in Neo-Romanesque style designed by engineer Francesco Barbaro, was solemnly opened for worship on December 9, 1934, on the site of an older mother church damaged by the 1908 earthquake. Elevated to a diocesan sanctuary in 1958, it houses an impressive Mascioni organ and 20th-century mosaics, serving as the spiritual reference point for the entire community.
The festivities span the entire month of July. On July 1st, at dawn, the evocative unveiling of the statue of the Madonna takes place, a moment of intense emotion shared by the entire citizenry, followed by the novena of preparation. July 16th, the liturgical day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is announced early in the morning by the sound of firecrackers.
The procession winds through the historic districts of Santa Teresa di Riva โ Bucalo, Fiorentino, Sparagonร , Sacra Famiglia, Borgo Marino โ stopping at the town churches before returning to the sanctuary. The day concludes late at night with traditional fireworks, which illuminate the Ionian coastline in a spectacular finale highly anticipated by residents and visitors alike. Alongside the religious festival, the Estate Teresina (Teresian Summer) calendar offers shows, concerts, and entertainment initiatives that enliven the town for most of the summer.
Defined by locals as "the town's oldest tradition," the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a community event that brings together generations, emigrants returning for the occasion, and devotees from neighboring towns. Its 19th-century roots, the solemnity of the procession, and the intimate atmosphere of the Bucalo Sanctuary make it one of the most characteristic patronal feasts on the Ionian coast of Messina.
For 2026, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Santa Teresa di Riva maintains its traditional calendar, marked by two key events: the unveiling of the statue on July 1st with the start of the novena, and the main festival on July 16th. The patronal day includes morning Eucharistic celebrations at the Bucalo Sanctuary, the solemn pontifical mass, the act of entrusting the city with the handing over of the keys by the mayor, and, in the evening, the procession of the statue preceded by the Discalced Carmelites through the town districts, ending with traditional fireworks. The detailed 2026 program (mass times, route, and side events of the Teresian Summer) will be published by the sanctuary and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Celebrations from July 1st (unveiling of the statue and novena) to July 16th (main festival with evening procession). The key day is always July 16th, the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
